Hmmm, My Beisen 7x57 didn't make the cut based on custombolts specs and I guarantee you it's more than 5k...... Yep. Top shelf ain't cheap. It doesn't take long to hit $5K. Many start above that.

I would venture a guess Bob, that a nice custom wood stock, completely finished would be several thousand dollars (at least) today, and I'm not talking Exhibition grade wood either. RD/Blackdog: You guys are right....but I've paid less. Course you aren't gonna get Monte Mandarino or Steve heilman for that money...even used. Saw a nice little Heilman rifle in a McM stock yesterday on Gunbroker that, if restocked in walnut, would likely run a total of $6 or $7K.

EdM I think I've seen that rifle....Mauser 338/06 or something? Nice working rifle. They do vary all over price wise....I look right past the one's that cost $20-25k.... I may be dating myself somewhat....I bought/built many of mine when they did not cost what they do today.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

+2 Terry. I have more than that in one I commissioned on a G33/40 military Mauser action, and no regrets!

Even over the past few years I have bought a few really nice customs for a fraction of what the current build cost would be. A bit of fun is lost but if the rifle fits and is what you are after, why not?

Jagdwaffen Mauser makes some high qulity rifles for sure. Same goes for Blaser. I just can't get over the new shape and new German technology. The wood on these guns can be astoundingly nice and I'm sure they shoot like a million bucks. I have yet to handle a new school Mauser. But I have handled a few Blaser's and they are very well balanced and fit and finish is identical on every gun. I guess I'm hopeless hooked on CRF Mausers or commercial variations. I wish Winchester would offer another mauser version with the old scool shape on the tang. I've gone to buy a new SC M70 FW a few times and just can't get by that goofy tang. Hey Brother. I'm not just buying A Mauser, I'm buying the craftsmanship or so I intend.

I talked to a builder and specified what I wanted. Isn't that what a custom is?

Gunner Yes. All you have to do is find a widow that has one, that has no idea what it is. Even then I couldn't do it. I just wouldn't feel right about it. Now, after I explained to her what she had, and told her to go and sell it for much more, if she still insisted, I would agree. My personal favorite wood stocked rifles (for today, anyway) is the Kilimanjaro Rifle. I just think the stealth lamination deal is cool. And hells yes I would get the gold-inlayed engraving.

RDFinn Sounds like $3k and up is about right. A commercial finish is assumed at that level. Hand-rubbed oil finishes are extremely time consuming and labor intensive.

Gunner Maybe one day Gunner. Until then, I found a Winchester Supergrade stock, some new bottom metal, ordered a barrel, and I'm sending it all to Redneck (when the barrel is done, that is). I'm not poor, but I have little kids, and preschool commitments, and college savings, and retirement savings, and etc. etc. etc. If a custom rifle were my #1 priority I could have one. But it's not. Not that I have any problems with anyone having a custom rifle. We all have different circumstances, and make different choices. I would love to take a custom rifle to Africa one day, and I'm hoping that day will be sooner rather than later. That's why I'm making financially stable decisions now.
