I can make a real case, in my own demented, rifle-loony mind that is, to take (4) rifles. That'd be a new record. I've taken three rifles several times. What happens is, I'll have Ol' Faithful, meaning a great elk rifle that'll do just fine... then a backup. That's reasonable and I suspect most of us do that. Most years Ol' Faithful is my excellent .338. The last several years my main two have been that .338 and my Montana, either as a .325 or last year and this year, as a 7 WSM. But then there's the rifles that are more specialized. How, I ask you, do you leave your stainless 45/70 Guide Gun home?! That'd be silly. There's thick timber on those north slopes. How do you leave the Sendero home? Hell, there's some big meadows up there where you could catch a bull at dusk waaay far away. And so on. This year I've got 4 that want to go and each of them has utility. The .338 and Montana have to go. Then there's my wonderful .325 BLR... I carried it most of a season up there one year and it, with it's 22" barrel and a 200-gn TSX in the spout and 3 more available FAST.... sure seems like it should go. And dammit, there's several HUGE meadows where guys kill elk every year. My pard keeps seeing them at dusk there. Easily 500-750 yard shooting though. That just screams for my Sendero with it's big Zeiss 50mm scope on top... Last year I just took two rifles and that'll probably be the case again this year but man, I'd just as soon wheel a whole gun safe up there!
The CENTER will hold.

Oh ya. I'm with you there.
I'll be carrying my goto rifle. My backup rifle is nearly identical to the first one - but 25 years younger.
Like you, I've got the 45-70 timber rifle and a Sendero for open country. Both have their place under certain circumstances.
How did I ever manage to kill elk by bringing only one rifle? I've found that if I haul lots of hardware up there it mostly gets in the way.

two for the last 40 plus years, my 340wby or a 375 h&H as a primary that gets about 70% of the hunt time,
the 358 win,35 whelen,270 win,30/06, 450 marlin or 300 wby as a personal back up and camp spare. every one has collected one or more elk either in my hands or in the hands of a friend in our camp, the 340wby,375 h&H and 358 win have been used most, when you drive 2300 miles each way you need a back up plan so access to a second rifle makes sense

I bring a primary .300Wby and a backup, often a non scoped K31 carbine but lately a scoped 338RCM. And I have another usually for the evenings that I am too tired to beat the hills but want to go and sit out, looking for a coyote or some such. That one can be a 223 or a 243. And I bring a .44 mag 629 S&W just in case one year I feel adventurous enough (or tired enough of lugging a rifle) to try handgun hunting.

Yeah, I do bring a pistola too, which has ranged from a 629 (heavy) to nowadays a very light Kahr P45. My conundrum of the moment is if I'm going to resurrect the .325 BLR into fighting trim. It's current w/o a scope. I have a Leup 2.5-8 on my .223 that I could stick on it. The beauty of that rifle is a FAST 2nd shot. I know some guys are fast with a bolt but I'm not. I have a bad habit of dropping the rifle down out of firing position to cycle the bolt, so every shot means re-acquiring the target etc. With a lever I stay on the target, stay glued to the scope. I've only killed two elk and both were with a .325 so I know the cartridge works great. See, I pretty much have to take it! There's not much opportunity for long shots where we hunt except these big meadows, and as you'd expect, the elk aren't in them... USUALLY. My buddy Jerry keeps seeing them at dusk feeding out from the timber. I hunted that meadow last year mid-afternoon to see if anybody had bedded down in the timber islands in it. I lazed it when I was doing that. Some great areas to set up a heavy long-range cannon with a big scope. See, now I pretty much have to take the Sendero, too!

When you guys say "elk camp" are you talking about pack-in camps or a camp you can drive a vehicle up to ?

one. and a 22 pistol for grouse and marten. I've been thinking I need a .22 upper for my Glock, now that it's legal to shoot grouse with one in Oregon. The bastids taunt me.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA
