i read the thread on a max's and have shotantelope with the bthp's. They made a mess but still exited. So i have limited experience using them on game. The reason i ask this, is, i have a dpms lr-308 with a 24" stainless fluted barrel that eats ragged holes and i have the clicks all worked out for it out to 1100 yards. I know oryx are supposed to be hard to kill, but would a 168 gr. bthp kill an oryx at over 600 yards or not? Im thinking taking a shoulder shot to get at the heart it may work because of the shed velocity, and possible non exploding bullet. Its just a thought. Right now Im good to 600 with a 140 gr. ttsx of of my 280ai. Looking at taking my 300 rum with 165 nosler solid bases, or my 338 rum launching 250 gr. sierra game king's as my back up. I have clicks for both of them as well. I just really like my lr-308, and would really like to kill an oryx with an ebr.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

If you are talking gemsbok type oryx...I'd say no...or at least I wouldnt attempt it....

I have shot quite a few oryx/gemsbok and it is a very big mistake to attempt to kill them much beyond 300 yards with anything. Actually, I suggest you go and hunt them which means stalking (eg crawling) closer. This is called " hunting " and is much more interesting. They need to be hit precisely. Your choice of a 280 with premium hunting bullets will work well. Those big cartridges with crap bullets are a big mistake. The oryx is a tough animal which will run longer than any NA game animal with which I am familiar. Get close first. Place your first shot well. They are great eating.
I used to do a lot scuba diving but learned the fish are pretty close to the surface so I went to free diving using only a snorkel. The "thrill of deep diving" was more for talk. So it is with the shooting part of hunting. Getting close is much more interesting. Inside 75 yards is a thrill.

Okay. Just wanted another opinion. Yeah a 168 smk and a gemsbuck aka oryx. Thanks. Added: Wsmr, says some long shot may be needed as the missile range has little cover for a stalk. My wife is going with me, and would dearly love for us to put a good stalk on, but just asked for a just in case..... A great stalk would make for a memorable hunt for the 2 of us.

The 3 I have shot I took out the shoulder and they did not go anywhere. A buddy clipped the bottom of a lung on one last year and it was an all day deal to get her.

I wouldn't even think about taking an SMK to Africa unless I was just shooting jackals. I sure wouldn't use them on a gemsbok.

Case settled. 280ai with 140 ttsx's that has taken 2 elk as the main gun, and maybe the 338 rum with 250 gr. tbbc's. That should work. I have 2 boxes of that stuff.

I've never shot an oryx but would listen carefully to GregR,and RinB (and the other chap who chimed in)because they have actually shot them.
I do know RinB has culled the things by the score, and has shot many of them with a 7mag,280,and 270.His advise on bullets for them is well worth listening to. GregR no need to comment. We all know he has BTDT.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

I have taken Oryx and if hit correctly they only go one place and that is down. A shot through the shoulders is perfect. Try not to hit them behind the shoulder and all will be well

Never seen an Oryx in real life, but I just can't imagine they're any different than a medium sized bull elk at best. Am I right?
I can't imagine any reason at all not to tuck the bullet in behind the fronts?

Nope Dober...the bullet goes right on the fronts. Oryx are built different enough that all the important stuff is farther forward. A shot in the 'crease' may result in a run-n-gun. Don't ask me how I know.....

Good luck Mark! I have seen 3-shot on the Stallion, 1-30-06 ran 200- yards but a marginal hit, .308-dropped it, but hit low in the front shoulder ,and 1 338 210gr NP dropped it like hit by lightning! Great eating and some day I will draw! 210gr NP meets Oryx.
Good Shooting!
