I have had no problem making 8x57 out of 30-06 brass with just a regular die set. I anneal the cases beforehand, then lube the living snot out of them, ram them through with the die set a teeny bit high. Then I use tin snips to cut to gross length, then use a trimmer and chamfer bits in a drill press to go for final book case length. Then, with those cases mostly formed, I'll re-set the FL die so the brass chambers with a firm nudge, then crank through the batch. Finally, I'll tumble them pretty and load them up. Results have been peachy fine. In fact, I'm thinking of drilling the action (a Yugo Nazi) for a scope. With a cheap 2x Chinese scope on the rear sight, or with the iron setup, it shoots SO close to an inch, I can't stand it any more. I can't see any better than the darn thing shoots now.

I do this for the vz24. I take 30-06 brass. Cut it to 57mm long. Run it through the 8x57 die and then trim it to recommended trim length with my case trimmer. Very simple actually. Not making an kind of match ammo or anything. If I can hit my paper plates/clays I'm happy.
Thanks to one and all very much for answering my plea for assistance in forming 8x57 Mauser brass from .30-06 Springfield brass! You gave me lots of information that I will have to sort through and decide which route to take.
I was especially intrigued by the suggestion to use .308 Win. brass and let it lengthen over time by shooting it. Would I have to be concerned about the neck brass getting too thin?
Again, thanks to all. This is certainly a helpful forum!
If I make 8x57 from 30-06 brass then get run over by a bus, my wife will sell it in a yard sale to some guy who fires it in a low number Springfield and blows himself up.
So, to avoid that bus, I'll buy 8x57 brass instead.
Most 39/06 chambers won't accept an 8x57. If one is chambered it isn't the oversize bullet it's the fact that the case mouth is jammed shut that blowes thing up.
I've decided that my case forming will be with brass that would not be a disaster if fired in the headstamped chamber. I always try to neck down, not up. If necking up, go way up.

My thoughts, exactly.

I've got a 9,3x57, would that be big enough to make 30/06 cases into?
Thank you again to everyone who came to my aid with helpful advice and information on this topic. I think I've got everything I need for now, but if I run into problems I'll get right back to this forum. The 24-Hour Campfire forums have always been very helpful to me! Thanks much!

That's way up. Some 8x57 has been jammed into some 30-06 chambers. Your 9,3 should not be possible.

I would like to see that. I have tried a number of times to chamber 8X57 in 30-06 rifles and it is not possible. This is another urban myth that has hung around for years.
Just stand the two loaded cases up side by side, and you will see why it cannot be done. In fact, try to chamber an empty 8X57 into a 30-06, and see how far you get.
Try chambering an 8X57 in any 30-06 rifle. Beat the bolt handle with a hammer and see if it will chamber.

Non of my '06's will chamber an 8x57 either. If the chamber is so oversized to accept an 8x57, maybe it needs to be blown up.
Shew me thy ways, O LORD: teach me thy paths. "there are few better cartridges on Earth than the 7 x 57mm Mauser" "the .30 Springfield is light, accurate, penetrating, and has surprising stopping power"
I have 2 1903 Springfields both will chamber a 8x57. As I recall the Winchester 95 would also that is why they stopped making it in 30/06. It isn't the oversize bullet ,what happens is that case mouth is jammed tight and pressure goes way up. Yes Virginia it can happen.
