Take care of Dusty today, are you in the motel right across from the entrance at mayo? stayed there last year, they had a cool street fair that happens every thursday right there.

Joe and I just returned from the cabin. We put out 2 cameras, on on a pond and one on a salt block by Pam's stand.

Cabin looks good, need to mow again soon though.

So true, every large cat dropping to hit MN soil is collected and cataloged for cat mapping purposes.

lol!!

bubbajay is refering to a story a while back where a large cat was discovered east of MN and DNR claimed that they had cataloged scat from the lion someplace in MN.

They recognized the poop.

grin

we use scat out here for DNA analysis as well, and since cat data is recorded everytime one is killed, they CAN at times determine its genetic origin such as where its ma or pa was killed. there are a few researchers out there who do collect the poop and try to map migrations or something with it. which is a little, well.... I guess some could argue the data has its purpose, I just don't know what it is. I'm with you guys, it seems a little silly to chase cat poop, but to each their own I guess. I just hope they are using private grant money rather than state or federal funds.

I'd say they had a chitty job. laugh

They're using cat poop to trace the migration of the cats seen here in WI. Most seem to come from MN, but at least one was traced back to the Dakotas.

DNR can map and track a cat with it's poop as if it was microchipped at birth.

We have 13 million illegal immagrants that we can't seem to track down.... But we can tell you where a mountain lion... (a wild animal) has been by looking at his magic poop?

Pass the tin foil, I need another layer.

DNA is used to determine where the cat was born. Almost all the midwestern cats that I know of were hatched in the Black Hills. There is a distinctive genotype that can identifies this population. They are all young males, so don't expect a big population of kitties to break out unless some females get the wanderlust - rare in female mammals. Either that, or some black helicopter work will be required. However, most black helicopters are currently too busy hauling wolves and cats will have to wait until after the grizzlies too. So don't expect imported lady cats for quite a while. wink

The poop can be used to do DNA analyses of the pooper, but it can also be used in stable isotope analyses and even DNA analyses to determine the origins of the poopee.

Knowing where they disperse and how they get there, gives folks some idea into where and how the populations MIGHT spread and a little bit of info about where they are unlikely to show up or what sorts of barriers might stop them.

Having never been pooped upon by a large cat, I can confidently say that I am not the poopee.

I got a chuckle out of that too. WI DNR did the same thing when they REALLY, REALLY didn't want to admit there being bit cats in WI. There were photos popping up on the news, my FIL was even interviewed because there was one in his yard and the neighbors...DNR said NOPE, you saw a bobcat. grin He's been in the woods for 60, pretty sure he knows what Mt. Lion looks like.

One of the cats was killed or photographed in north central WI and the DNR finally said, "well based on DNA that particular cat was passing through from the Dakotas."

All you can do is shake your head.
