I will be buying a scope in the next few weeks for a deer rifle I am building for my son. It is a 30-06.
He would like a Zeiss scope. How is the quality of the Zeiss 3x9 Conquest?

It is the best scope I've used on long-action sporter weight rifles. Simply fantastic. The eye relief will spoil him, bright as heck in low light, and relatively cheap. I have one on my '06 and one on my .338.
There's a downside, though, and that's the large ocular. It will clear the bolt of a Rem700 in Talley low's. That's with a BC flip-up in it. It would NOT clear in say Leupold low's with the flip-up cap on it.
The CENTER will hold.

Yep on all of Jeff's points. I have a few ( okay, five or six) and wish I would have bought more before the 'instant rebate' ended.

It will spoil him, possibly setting him on an irreversible path toward optics snobbery. Make sure he does lots of extra chores for you.

Agreed that the 3-9 Conquest has superior optics to most scopes.
However if the rifle is to be very light and compact then that Conquest is on the big and heavy side.
I have Conquests on most of my top hunting rifles.
Cabelas had the 3-9 Conquest at $399 today.

Try this, http://www.midwayusa.com/product/301769/zeiss-mc-conquest-rifle-scope-3-9x-40mm-z-plex-reticle-matte I just picked one up, haven't mounted it yet, but I'm sure looking forward to it this week! I'm even thinking I may have to "justify" purchasing another so I don't kick myself in the butt when I need another scope for the next rifle Geno

You would be hard pressed to find a better scope, for the money. They are an exceptional buy at $399. I have two of them.

They are excellent. If you want to save 1/2 lb consider the new Leupold VX-2 3-9X40.

I have one on my Sako .308 and its my go to rifle. I lso have a couple of Bushnell Elites that don't run far behind but were cheaper (there prices seem to be going up)

Here is what some of my unmounted extra scopes weigh. Leupold VX-111 2.5-8 11.3 oz. Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8 13.7 oz. Zeiss Diatal 4X32mm 11.1 oz.

For the money you will not find a better scope than the conquest.

Thank you gentlmen for your assistance. I hustled over to Cabela's web site and bought on for the $399.99 price which is $100.00 off regular.
The weight is not an issue and the rifle is not a lightweight with a 24" medium weight barrel and a walnut stock. My son is 35 years old and stands 6'10" tall, so he can handle it with ease.

I bought one because the price was so low. Well you get what you pay for. Singularly unimpressed.

Even the biggest optic yuppie would have a hard time putting up a logical argument against a conquest considering its price point. Admittedly its a bit heavier than others that it's often compared to.

gunchamp: A couple of things, first there appears to be an "aura" of distortion around the edges. I'm sure there is a technical term for it. The Ocular lens is HUGE, thereby requiring high mounts, plastic turretc covers and frankly my comparable Leupolds seem to present a clearer image in low light. jorge
