A buddy picked up a Pre-64 Model 70 in a pawn shop here yesterday. The serial number dates it as a 1956 model. It's a .270 with the Winchester Featheweight stamp on the barrell, correct action, nice blue & a beautifully figured old walnut stock. The weird thing is that the stock is a mannlicher stock ??? The rifle looks original, but I have never heard of or seen a Pre-64 with that type of Stock on it. I just figured some idiot re- stocked this rifle.
I was hoping some of y'all that collect old model 70's could shed a little light on the subject. My friend thinks he's has a one of a kind "special order" rifle. I don't think so ? Any info will be helpfull. Thanks.

I think a restock or wood added to the front to make it look like a "full-stock.

I too would guess a re-stock. I've never seen or heard of a pre 64 mannlicher.

Winchester did an Engineering prototype back in the 50's with a full length mannlicher stock. However it was very unique in that it had a special shortened receiver and was 257 Roberts. It carries an "exp" part number as well. Supposedly done to test the European market. It never got past the protoype stage. Steve

In special orders anything is possible but a full length stock is highly unlikely. Do you have pictures? How long is the barrel?

Winchester started making M70 Mannlicher stocks in 1969. Someone might have adapted one of these?

I'll see if I can get him to email a photo of his rifle. But, I'm betting it's a re-stock or modified stock. It has a 22". Barrel & standard Featherweight action. Thanks for all the info.
