The local paper here in Dillon, Montana, in a front page article today, gave us the sad news that Al Troth passed away.
I first met Al over 15 years ago and enjoyed his wisdom and conversation on many dozens of occassions - more often at the Rifle range than at his home/fly shop or on Montanas waters.
Most folks do not know that Al Troth was a VERY accomplished Rifleman and Hunter.
I have fished with Al's flies on many waters.
The wonderful Elk Hair Caddis fly that Al developed in 1957 is a staple in my fly boxes.
Al attained the age of 82.
Al's genius was demonstrated in many and varied fields from photography to writing published articles to machinist work and metallurgy and leather craft.
Al also taught Industrial Arts for a time.
Al taught Hunter Education for many years here in SW Montana.
Al served in the United States Navy for 4 years.
Al also spent many years in the Montana National Guard.
Al's ashes will soon be spread among his favorite Hunting and fishing locations.
This fall when I cast my Elk Hair Caddis flies into Montanas lakes and streams I will be thinking of the fond memories I have of this fine and gentle man.
Hold into the wind

RIP.

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.

Never met him personally, but have seen his name listed in many credits. Had I met him streamside, I'm sure I would have enjoyed his company and expertise.
