I just built a 6.5 Grendel for the same purpose (deer and hog). I went with the Grendel because I really like the ballistics of the Grendel and already had the reloading gear I use for my long target rifle. -Upper is 16" 1:9 twist JT Distributing upper (excellent upper) I just took it out this last weekend and shot a .75moa at 100 yards with my initial load of 27gr of Benchmark behind a 123gr Hornady A-MAX. -Aero Precision lower -Rock River Arms NM trigger -DPMS parts kit -DPMS wood furniture (stained and sealed by me) -Leupold VX2 3x9-50 scope -Burris XTR scope rings and another

Crappy camera phone picture, but you'll get the idea... 6.5 Grendel with a Thunderbeast 30P-1 suppressor and wearing a Nightforce 3-15x50 with zero stop up top.

The deer are stupid where I live, they die the same regardless of what I shoot them with, 300 WSM, 30-06, 308, 270, 257Roberts, 44 mag, even 5.56.

I shoot an AR Performance 6.8 SPC for deer and hogs. 16" barrel rather than the longer tube you have to have to get all the 'goody' from a 6.5 Grendel. But, just as jimmyp above says, hit'em in the right place and they die regardless of what you shoot'em with!!

Get a .223/5.56. You'll be able to more practically use it for a whole bunch of stuff besides hunting, and practice is cheap.

I've seen lotsa pics here of dead deer via 223AI. I'd think a 223AI on the AR would be rather handy as there are a lot of 1~7 barrels out there - except for chasing brass in the bush.

I'll stick with my 6.8 for hunting it has more energy and makes a larger hole than the .223.

I just built a 6.5 Grendel for the same purpose (deer and hog). I've never seen anything like that but, as different as it is, I like the way it looks for a hunting gun.....
Biden's most truthful quote ever came during his first press conference, 03/25/21. Drum roll please...... "I don't know, to be clear." and THAT is one promise he's kept!!!

I'll stick with my 6.8 for hunting it has more energy and makes a larger hole than the .223. A larger entry hole. Exit holes are results of choice of projectile and shot location.

I was somewhat sceptical of using a .223 for deer until I tried it for myself. With the right bullet it gets the job done.
As far which one, there are too many that work to pick a favorite. Just find one that's accurate, reliable and comfortable to shoot and you have a winner.

I"m all for picking the right bullet. And used to be really anal about it.
In the meantime I've ended up with targets of opportunity on hogs, javelina and deer many a time with match bullets in the gun. Generally 75 bthp practice ammo... hasn't a single one failed me yet.
And to top it off, I watched a buddy, with amazement and some serious reservations, shoot his allotment of deer every year, in the lungs broadside with 55 FMJ military LC ammo. Never saw one go very far either. And more than a few just flopped. VERY opposite of the results of me shooting a doe with my 50 bmg and a ball round some years ago.
