I have used Winchester Brass for my -06 since I started hand loading (4yrs). The last bag of 50 I was surprised to see nearly every case had slight neck distortions and 6 of the 50 had less case volume.

Anyone else experienced this with Win Brass lately.

What brand brass do you all use for your -06 loads?

Yes its not that uncommon. Be sure to inspect the brass I had three in the last batch of fifty that were missing a strip of brass like cracked only bigger, I sent them back to Winchester and received a 10 dollar rebate for the trouble. Winchester is the go to brass for me but understand it has its defects like any of them do. I full length size all new brass and that should remove the "crushed" necks that you are seeing.

Guess I should have sent them back. Wish I would have weighted the water volume of the six I threw away.

I use Winchester for my serious '06 loads.
All you need do is pass the expander ball into the neck and straighten it out. Very common with any brass I've used. I do all of mine to make sure the bullet seats smoothly. No need to full lenth size or even neck size new brass. E

E,
I get that. I had 6 of the 50 cases that I'd bet held 2-3 less grains of powder. I figured pressure would increase on those loads. So I discarded them. I did re-pour several times and each time put powder on the scale. Loads were all the same yet filled the case to a much higher point.

E,

A second look in each case with the flashlight before bullet seating reveled the difference.

I use Win and Rem.

So

I am ready for the flame

But

If you are going to go to all the trouble of measuring case volume,

Do you fully prep and weigh and sort the cases before you check the volume?

I would bet that after a full prep those cases would not weigh close to each other.

Most of the time the brass we get from REM or WW is pretty good.

With regard to weighing or checking water volume, I suggest you do both AFTER fire forming and trimming to length after the forming. Unless you're a benchrester you're wasting time most of the time checking water volume. Usually if your dry weight after the forming and trimming is within a couple or three grains, you'll not see any difference in water weight. The only time I do it is when there is a mixed lot of brass, different head stamps, or when forming cases off of different parent cases as for wildcats or necking up or down.
