Not as fun as it sounds. After a number of years doing that and waging war on pigs for reseach it takes a lot of the "fun" out of killing stuff. I used to hunt 90+ days a year at least but the collecting and pig war burned me out on it frown

1) 30-06
2) 30/30

Others worth mentioning were;

4) 270
5) 308
6) 243

So who here hasn't killed a deer with one or more of these rounds? Out of the six I listed, the only one that I haven't used to kill a deer is the 22lr.

What about you guys?

EDIT*** Here are just a few personal facts about my history with some of these cartridges.

I have killed more deer with a 30/06 than any other cartridge.

I killed my first buck, and also my biggest buck with my 336 Marlin in 30/30.

I have only killed two deer with a 270. Interestingly, the two deer I killed with the 270 are by far the smallest bucks I have ever killed. I think this only solidifies the idea that the 270 is gay. grin

I have killed deer with 30-06 (2), 30-30 (1), and .22LR (2).

I have not used a .270 or .243 (at all!) and while I've owned a bunch of .308's, never killed anything with .308 either.

Of the list I have only killed a deer with the 30-06 and .308. I have killed more with the 30-06 than any of my others. The other rounds I have used are...
.280
7mm Rem Mag
.257 Roberts

Of the six listed, I put the kibosh to deer with only the .30/06 and .30/30, both with about equal numbers of kills. The rest were with .45 and .50 round balls, 6.5x55 M70 Win, .257 Roberts Mannlicher-Schoenauer, .30/40 Krag, .58 Springfield, and probably a couple more I can't recall off the top of my head. After 45 years of deer killing, they sort of start to run together! If I could reach back through time and pluck one gun out to do all of it, it would be the M-S .257 Roberts.

I can't speak for everyone, only myself.

I have been a rifle loony all of my adult life, that helps.

Many yrs ago I began keeping records, not as detailed as I wish now.

I've had the 'majority' of standard cals/cartridges. A FEW of those I neither hunted nor killed game with.

I've had several of the magnums and killed deer with ALL except one. (338 WM - kicked like a MAD MULE - got rid of it, AIN'T ASHAMED.)

It's easier for me to KNOW which cal/cart I have NOT used to killed deer.

Records help a lot b/c memory is faulty foundation.

I've never killed a deer with a 22LR, 243 or 270 and I wouldn't try it with a 22LR. Most of the deer I've killed, I forgot what I shot it with. Shoot, most of the deer I've killed I've forgot...

I've killed a deer with all except the .243. The .22 LR was a pistol used to finish a deer wounded by a friend using a 20 ga. slug. The deer was close enough to death to let me walk up on it and shoot it in the head.

Never killed a deer with any of those...

All of my deer have fallen to .300 Savage.

I'm trying to change that a bit though...

None of the above.

Have used;
.250 Savage
8x57 Mauser
7x57 Mauser

I've carried the .30-30 & 30-06 without drawing blood. The .30 cals don't seem to be very lucky for me. Missed a little buck with the '06, but generally don't see hair when I carry a .30.

Probably use either a .270 or 9.3x62 this year.

My deer kills
30-30 = 3 (including my biggest and smallest for the record)
270 = 1

The only other cartridges I have had while hunting were a 30-06 and a 7 mag

Kilt a few with 270 and 30-30 but most with various 7mm chamberings, none of which are listed.

I must be doing something wrong smirk

I have killed deer with 42 different cartridges ranging from .225 Win. to .404 Jeffery and the only one on that list that I have used is the .243 Win. I LOVE hunting with odd-ball cartridges and for the most part, the bread & butter cartridges bore me to tears...
