I was just perusing Ahlman's website and noticed that they have a new muzzle brake. In there explanation they go on to explain that one of the ways the brake controls recoil is by greatly reducing the rocket effect. While I don't think their brake is anything really new, it got me thinking. I know a brake is more effective on a "bigger" cartridge, but by saying that do they mean to say a more "inefficient" cartridge. Seems like the rocket effect would be greater on a "overbore" cartridge (30-378 Wby for instance) that produces lots of flash and noise, than it would be on something that is traditionally thought of as efficient, say a 35 Whelan. I'm not looking at doing anything "crazy" .....yet, but it would be a good thing to know.

Muzzle brakes do work "better" i.e. take away a higher percentage of the felt recoil in cartridges with high muzzle pressure because of the way they work. See previous threads about these monsters before you buy one and begin the deafening process.

Those big Weatherby cases have probably twice the pressure at he point of exit and more than twice the powder .This is probably between 20000 -25000 psi. Shock and awe. We fired a 30-378 under a roof and it made the steel pipe support close by hum -never saw that before. That was with the brake Weatherby uses. Glenn

BJ72,
You are correct in your assertion. There is typically more rocket effect with an "overbore" cartridge (large case, relatively small bore). I can also vouch for your opinion on the 30-378 mag - the rocket effect is quite "pronounced." The comments about muzzle pressure are also spot-on. Everybody's right - I love this country.

Thanks for the quick responses fellas! I certainly wouldn't be shooting it at the range without plugs and muffs. I'd make sure I had the range to myself for that matter too. But I would shoot it alot. Both from the bench and from a variety of field positions. I also wouldn't hunt with the brake on. I just like being able to hear too well I guess. So, based on your experiences, is a reduction of 50% realistic on an overbore cartridge?
