Has arrived!!

UPS surprised me today and added more stress on my shoulders by bringing her in today. 8 days from my hunt and she arrives in all her glory! I seriously have NEVER been this excited over a gun. I compared it to dating a girl for a while and then.... Well I can't say the rest but this is one friggin amazing muzzleloader that has complete style to it and feels like a perfect fit. I test fitted a 4x scope on it just to see and that sucker with the medium mounts that came with it, was perfect view of my eye, i didnt have to move my head side to side to get things lined up, It was perfect.

The oil that was protecting the bore and other metal almost had that diesel fuel smell.... Odd, yes... But it cleaned out extremely easily with Gun Scrubber and then followed up by Bore Scrubber and a Bore Brush. I also cleaned the breech plug threads out and made sure to flood that area with the Gun Scrubber to make sure that any kind of machining flakes were left over in there, they got flushed out.

Once that was done I installed a new Western Powders Blackhorn209 breech plug, snugged it up TIGHT to mate the face of the plug to the chamber inside the barrel. Next i removed the firing pin bushing, cleaned it out, relubed and then added a .005" shim to the bushing to adjust the "head space" to keep a snug fit against the primer to prevent blow by. This MR had excellent head space to begin with so only a thin shim was needed to make it perfect.

Next I stripped the forearm, barrel, rear stock and again used Gun Scrubber and sprayed down the frame exterior and internals. A good thing to because most people think all you need to do is wipe down the gun, clean the bore and its good to go. No way! Some don't realize that some machine shavings may still be left behind after assembly. I found some shaving mainly in the rear stock mount hole on the frame. It still leaves into the trigger assembly which can really mess something up or worse, make it feel gritty. CLEAN IT! No matter what Brand of Muzzleloader it is.

I measured the trigger right out of the box and it broke clean and crisp at 27oz and then 25oz. After cleaning out the guts with the Gun Scrubber and re-oiling with Gun Oil " PTFE Lubricant" She broke 3 times in a row at 27oz. Another beautiful trigger!

The biggest thing is the color combo for some. Its a very very light Tan, depending on the lighting i guess. The Weather Guard they used is nothing like Ceracoat which is very rough and dirty feeling. This WG is very smooth and slick and doesn't give off a glare, even during my picture taking in which i used a flash.

But enough with the talk, I will be writing a review on this gun later on during hunting season while we hunt with it. Heres the pics guys.


Not a big fan of the ramrod palm saver BUT if you load sabots, its very handy. Its just not needed with my Thors so I will leave it off.




Unscrew it and have a cleaning jag as well as a built in bullet loader. It fits Thors and Powerbelts perfectly, I will have to try the sabots I have on hand and get a list going on what it will work with.

They also have improved the Ramrod Guide Thimbles that have plastic inserts to keep the rod quiet while stalking or while pulling/replacing it back under the barrel. They hold the ramrod A LOT tighter than the V2, Optima, Wolf, Apex. Hopefully they update the other guns with this as well

New Quake sling also has been updated with Steel parts rather than the plastic the originals came with. Love the slings but the old ones had cheap plastic parts that were hard to screw in and unscrew. This is a huge welcoming improvement IMO.

The recoil pad I am not sure about yet. IMO it seems a lot harder than the original crushzone recoil pad. Im not sure if that will be a good thing on a 6lb rifle but I wont judge it yet until I shoot it.

Sharp! I like the ramrod design a lot. Very handy. Is the breechplug from BH necessary or and option? I was curious if they just made better ones than most factory for shooting BH209. What components do you plan on trying out?

CVA and Western Powder make BH 209 BP's for the CVA inlines. I've tried them both, and I like the Western Powder version better. They cost around $25. Well worth it for perfect ignition everytime.

It's critical to keep the flash channel clean. The Western Powder version comes with the proper size drill and drill holder to clean it out. Just a few twists by hand, and the carbon comes right out.

how does this muzzle loader compare to the cva apex? i sold my tc katahdin carbine and am ordering a new cva apex but this rifle looks sharp too!

Apex can use centerfire barrels, the MR is strictly a muzzleloader. If you are mainly wanting a ML, This one i HIGHLY recommend. If you think its sharp looking, i guarantee you WILL be shaking like i was the entire time i was cleaning the gun when i first got it.

i knew the apex has interchangable barrels that was kinda why i was leaning that way. prob wouldnt consider it but they make a whelen barrel 4 them

The Apex is quite a bit heavier, because of the CF. They had to make the receiver from steel. The MR is aluminum

The MR is actually an Apex receiver and stock, and shortened Accura barrel.

Kind of a mutt, but what a nice mutt.

thanks. i just did some research i i think that the accura mr is probably about right for me vs the apex. and its cheaper! i kinda was lookin to order it in .45 but it doesnt really matter, all my other ML's are 50's and i have tons of stuff for them. great review and thanks again!!

I plan on doing an in field review during the hunt with the MR. Now all we have to ask is.... Will Pete be to shy to step in front of the camera with the MR and give his opinion on the rifle and how it is carrying it around in the brush?

CVA hits another home run with the new MR. Everyone is eating CVA's dust these days..only other one I would consider is the Traditions LD hunter.

Looks to me like the courts are eating CVA's dust. Nice looking muzzleloaders but too many catastrophic failures and lawsuits for my liking.

I don't see any Accura rifles on the list. They have the Bergara barrels. You also don't know if the cause is barrel failure, or user error.

Everybody thinks TC barrels are safe. They magnaflux the barrels, and can't fail. They have proof marks showing they're safe. Well, I say bull.

It took me 10 seconds to find this case, and i'm sure if I wanted to find more it would be hard.

That was a USED muzzy. Who knows how it was treated.Look at all the cases on the CVA, they have always been sub par.

Who's to say all the CVA's weren't abused too? It's pretty easy with a muzzleloader.

the only F'n problem i see w/ the cva accura MR is that i cant find one! ive called a ton of places w/ in 100 miles or so and nobody has one. im pizzed!!

I've owned several. I was young and didn't know any better. Thankfully I wasn't injured seriously. The quality is just miserable.

If you were young. You couldn't have had the current versions. Lots of changes in the last few years.

T/C Encore today....but they cost money and are American made. IMO the T/C Impact is better than anything CVA will ever make. Knight is also making safe muzzleloaders.

Isn't the Encore the one guys put Bergara barrels on?

I don't think Bergara would bother making them if they didn't sell a lot of them. I don't see anybody putting TC barrels on CVA's.

The reason they cost money is the amount of outdoor shows with their "Hunters" schilling encores. Encore is a step beyond the Apex by far. Knight went out of business once and is headed that way again. I thought you bought a Remington 700 Muzzie LOL

got my new cva accura MR tonight!! ive been lookin at the apex for a few months and as soon as i sold my tc katahdin encore i was going to buy it. when i read this review and did some research i relized the MR was what i actually wanted and boy im glad i did. its 1030 pm so i havnt had a chance to go over it and clean it up but i did set a luepy vx2 1-4 in the rigs and it looks and feels awesome! thanks guys!!!

i bought mine BECUSE of this review. now i have a damn question lol. you show mention of swapping out breech plugs for one designed for bh209.is there a reason not to shoot bh209 w/ the factory breech plug? just curious cuz thats what i prefer. i do have a bunch of 777 and goex ffg and two boxes of white hots but i was not all that happy w/ the white hots the first time i used them. they seemed corosive and stunk to high heavens. any input either way woud be great. thanks again guys!

The original BP was designed before BH 209 was invented. It's actually made for pellets.

If you want reliable ignition with BH 209. You need a BP designed for it.
