IM looking to buy a custom savage 10fcp-k for a long range gun in a 7mm. Im going to have them put 26in barrel flutted with the heavy bolt and of course the accu trigger. I will leave the hs precision stock on it till after hunting season then send it off to mcmillian to get it glass bedded on the a4 stock. Im wondering if this would be the right decision for a long range gun 800yrd+. By budget is around $2000 and was wondering if this would be the ideal purchase. Could you guys help me out and tell me if this would be a good start or should i look into something else. It will be for target shooting and hunting elk and deer.

Tracker For that kind of $$ you could pick up a custom 7mm from the classifieds on here or LRH and have some $ left to put toward optics.

It's your money so IF you like the savage platform, I say by all means do it.....Of the savages I've seen and shot, they have been absolute tackdrivers and never a problem with funtion....They sure arn't the prettiest thing around but they sure do shoot....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Used 700 Sendero 7 Mag and a 4.5-14 Leupy would do it all for me if I wanted to get into killing critters are long range.

at first i was going to go with a sendero but they are really heavy and bulky then i decided to go with savage because from what i herd is that they are the most accurate out of box. I dont have a local gunsmith or much around here where i am from so i couldnt have a custom built one here in town. There are some in utah and what-not which isnt bad i guess for a drive, but if i find a good price on a used gun that someone recommends i would go with that.

Senderos aren't going to be a whole lot heavier than the Savage you describe, and a nicely thought out Sendero will rock hard.
Or, you could just go ahead and get a Kimber MT 280 Arckey or 7WSM and have something that weighs under 8lbs all up and can pound schit at 1k. That's probably what I would do... it'll test your shooting ability and patience learning to shoot it well past 500 but there's just really not much you can't do with an outfit such as that.

For 2k a guy could buy a used savage/Remington/Winchester etc strip it for the action, sell parts and be into his action $300-400 ish. That leaves $1600 or so for a custom spec'd barrel, smith work, upgraded trigger, McMillan and reasonable glass. Not too hard to do as has been seen here numerous times. This is my latest one and if memory serves me right I'm into this one about $2150 turn key. It's built entirely to my specs to include the twist and throating i wanted in my barrel, action fully blueprinted, tuned Timney trigger, 20 MOA base and rings, VXIII 4.5-14 LR and the McMillan. It is a .280 Ackley and shoots 162 AMAX (which its throated for) at 3110 fps and 140 TTSX at 3305 fps (both worked up to book max and safe in my rifle) under 1" at 200 yds with boring regularity. The full bore loads seem to be doing just as well and groups are slightly improving each trip as its only got about 150 rounds through it yet.

MA, you set that thing up REALLY nicely! 162 A-Max jamming above 3100 is a hummer!

I can't get you into a McMillan but for around $1850 you could build your Savage in a matter of a couple of weeks with in stock parts except for the fluting. I don't know what Savage would charge for a custom shop M10. The stock I chose would require some inletting work be done as well to fit the barrel and centerfeed magazine, if you have to get someone to do it it will add to the cost of your rifle. Stevens 200 LA rifle $330. Sharp Shotoer Supply has a Competition trigger (better than Accutrigger IMO), recoil lug, and bolt handle for another $170. Northland Shooter Supply has 26-28" Shilen barrels in stock $359 or less. Midway has a B&C Medalist stock for $259, Barrel Nut Wrench $23, Warne 20 MOA base $107, and Leupold QRW rings to mount your scope $50. The Sample List has a Leupold VX3 4.5-14X40 $450 and I think to upgrade to a CDS dial at Leupold custom shop is about $100. Once you sell off your old stock, barrel, trigger, and bolt handle for around $135-150 you'll wipe out most of the shipping and transfer fees that I didn't include. Plus you can change some of the parts up to save some money as well. Then if you really must have barrel fluting you can get that done for around $250 from places like Score HI Gunsmithing. That will bring you in at $2100 for the total package. When it is all said and done I like Tanners idea better.

Whats the specs of your rifle? If you meant mine they are as follows: Rem 700 ADL, action fully trued and blueprinted. Bolt fluted PTG Adl Trigger guard Timney trigger 280A.I. 24" fluted #5, 3 groove, 9 twist PacNor Stainless Super Match throated for 162 Amax a skosh under magazine max EGW 20 MOA base Leupold Medium PRW rings Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 X 42mm Long Range scope with elevation turret and duplex reticle. McMillan Remington Hunter 60%OD, 25% Black, 15% Medium Grey. Weighs 9.3 lbs as pictured sans bipod. Not the fanciest iron on the fire by a long shot but fits my idea of a middleweight long range deer, elk, bear and steel toy perfectly. I have smaller and larger calibers, heavier and lighter guns but am really digging this one. Shot this 3 shot group last weekend at 200 prone off a bipod and rear bag. It is indeed one of my better groups but close to typical for this rifle. The one round up and right is my 257 weatherby confirming zero.

PAC Nor did all of the initial work, had it double checked by a top notch local smith and he said it was spot on. Shoots like I too. <grin>
PacNor will install their Super Match barrel to your spec'd caliber, twist and the throating, flute barrel and action and do all the blue printing and smithing for right at $800 IIRC. This is the 6th one I've had them do and they have all shot as good as more expensive customs I've owned.
Lots of good smiths out there who could do the same for about the same cost. The only real holdup is waiting on the barrel.
Planning a fast twist .243 AI next and haven't decided whether it will go to PacNor or Benchmark Barrels here in Wa, they do awesome work as well for similar cost.
