My son and I took my 8 year old grandson to the rifle range today. First we started with a .22 chipmunk rifle and the boy just amazed his dad and I. He was hitting small silhouette targets out to 75 yards consistently. When I say small I mean 2" square chickens.

We were just amazed at that so we pulled out the .223 youth model vanguard. He had shot the rifle a little last year and was able to keep his shot inside of 4" or so at 40 yds, but this year was a completely different story. He proceeded to hit targets from 50 yds. to ringing 10" steel gongs at 150 and 200 yards. His dad and I were just amazed. All we could do was laugh each time this boy hit target after target. His 100 yd. groups were around 2".

Now for the best part. His dad and I have been wanting him to deer hunt with us this year but he only weighs 56 lbs. and we were uncertain if he could handle the recoil of a .243 and still maintain some degree of accuracy. A .223 is not legal to hunt deer with in Virginia so we took the .243 along but was unsure if we would even let him shoot it. We did not want him to develop a flinch, or worse become scared of the rifle. Well he wanted to shoot it and again we were just amazed at this boys ability. He shot it just as well as the .223, and again rang steel out to 200 yds. The rifle is a very light Winchester 70 mini carbine, and it pushed him around a little but he stayed right behind it and only smiled after each shot.

Needless to say his dad and I were amazed and are very proud of him, and no deer inside of 100 yds is going to be safe around this boy this year.

Sounds like he's ready! Should be a fun season for all of you this year. Look forward to seeing pictures of his first deer! Good luck!

We are real proud of him and his ability. Now if we can just get him in the right spot at the right time I think we can get him a deer.
