I just have the long rifle version, but it has been dependable and accurate on prairie dogs out to about 100 Yards. My son has the youth model that he has outgrown, but he beat it all to Hell on and off his ATV, but it's always worked, too.

The receiver exterior is a plate that slides over the the milled action. I had scratched the paint (its not blued) my fault entirely, and the finish flaked off the size of a dime, BUT the folks at Henry sent me another cover, free of charge. Great service!
Beyond that, I mounted a 3x6 varmint scope to it, and it flat outright shoots great. I use it for woodchucks, coyotes, and even the indestructible grinner. Its a head shot given inside 100 yards.
The action is smooth, with final lock-up accented by an audible click.
Trigger is fine as well.
You won't be disappointed if you want a utility gun.
had one In 22 and Mine was innacurate ,wouldn,t consistently shoot into less than 1-1/2 at 25 yards. Friend of mine had one that would consistently average 3/4 inch at 25 yards. Who knows with this wide disparity. Craig
Whatever rifle you choose given the parameters you cite I would go with either a 4x if I wanted a fixed power or a 2-7 or a 3-9 if I liked a variable probably going with the 2-7 for the squirrels at 50, 2-7 instead of the 3-9 more than likely because most of the time the 2-7 is a little smaller in physical size than the 3-9 but still plenty of power for 50 yard squirrels yet down at 2 or 4x still good for close range hogs and rabbits. If the squirrels at 50 yards were not on the adgenda I would say go with the 4x fixed and it would do for that just starting to get a little dicey on that small of a target in the woods . Just my oppinion of course.Good luck Just for oppinion agaiN I really like the Leupolds both new and used especially as you can find a real bargain on here as well. And they are often very light with good eye relief.Any of them will work but Either the FX II 4x or a M-8 4x in the fixed versions, either the 2-7 rifleman, the Varix II 2-7 or on up will do and you could even go up in price but any of these will more than suffice. Good Luck Craig
My wife has a .22 LR Henry, and tried several different brands of ammo. Some wasn;t all that accurate, and some was, which is par for .22's.
With the factory open sights Eileen can kill ground squirrels regularly at 50 yards. Could look up what the groups average, but it doesn't really matter, does it?
