Just wondering what yall thought about these two. I want a stainless, at least six inches. I would like to hunt whitetails with it eventually. My cousin has a Super Red Hawk that I might be able to get for around $300. It is in really good shape. I am not sure about what Tarus, but it will follow the same restrictions that I set above. I have shot bolt and I like them, but are there any special reasons that any of you favor one over the other. Also, what load do you use for hunting. I reload so that isn't a problem. Thanks for the help fellas. Ryan

The Ruger SRH is a very accurate revolver, and for $300, there would be no doubt as to which I'd choose. If you put a scope on it, 2-6 variable would be about right, and worked up loads, ie varying by 1/2 gr, and grouping it, you should see some very small groups. I would not be the least supprised if you are getting 5 shot 1" groups at 50 yds.

As far as what load, there is the expanding jacketed bullet camp, and the hardcast camp. Personally I'd go with a hardcast bullet of 270-300 gr @ ~1300 fps. H 110 and CCI 350 primers behind the bullet of your choice, and don't go below listed loads.

I would recommend the Ruger. I have owned a redhawk since 1985 and have put literally tens of thousands of rounds through it and it is still as tight and as accurate as the day I got it. No powder puff loads either. The thing is an anvil with a tube. I have taken several deer with this pistol. For my deer hunting load, I shoot a 250 gr. semi-wad under 22 grains of 2400 and a CCI 350 magmum primer. I have never had to shoot twice. Bambi went down like a bag of bricks.
While Taurus has a lifetime guarantee on their handguns, I do not know of anyone who has ever had to send a Ruger back to the factory for repair. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Taurus.
Good Luck.
Keeb

rlb,
Have you looked at the S&W?... much better trigger, meaning better shootability sp?
If going for a Ruger, you migh think about a Blackhawk or superblackhawk.
I've owned and still own a cupple of 3 screw models that were/are superb hunting handguns. again, better triggers.
good luck in your search. vbshootinrange.

For $300? Ruger all the way. Even if I had to buy new over the counter, it would be S&W or RH before a Taurus. my 2 cents

Mr. rlb_deerhunter,

Probably couldn't go wrong with either. But of the two I'd take the Ruger. However, I'd certainly look for a S&W 629. I like the S&W triggers right out of the box.

IMHO I'd also learn to shoot it double action only. For a period of time when I was much younger and had better eyes I got so I could shoot my 629 as well da as sa out to 100 yards or so.

The benefit is the gun is safe but to make it fire all you have to do is squeeze. And shooting a revolver single action requires some considered movement and sometimes more noise that you need.

Deputy_Norm
