If you passed up bucks like that on public land in NY, you might just get to hunt for a lifetime without ever pulling the trigger.

Blackheart -
I hear ya ---
I can also tell you there is NOT one member of our deer club that
would pass up that buck. ( So. Ark.)
For one thing if you passed on him > the NEXT guy would shoot him, including me.
Also, public land or lease or private - IMO that buck is old enough to show his potential and he should be removed from the breeding cycle.

With a growth year like this, the odds of that hoss getting much better would seem kinda low.. When that neck swells up pre-rut it will likely take a Mulie form to fill out that cape! Be sure to weigh it when it hits the ground & subtract 110 grains from the total, as it may not make it through. Good Luck, brudda!

If I'm waiting for something bigger in pa, well I might as well take up knitting and quilting with my wife. Kind of like if you were sitting around a bar full of supermodels when you were single and saying "Should I go hit on her?".

Have you ever hunted WI?
Lots of trophy hunters, but just as many or more hunters that would never get a chance at a buck that size again.
He doesn't live long after first light if he's up and moving. Probably a pretty good chance that if he's still up and moving within thirty minutes prior to first light, he's going to end up in someone's pick-up.
I am absolutely amazed at the number of early shots on Opening Day, and I'm not talking minutes before opening either.

I would wait. What's the hurry? I am thinking a 45 Colt hole would work.

Well, I'm gonna have to say no. Here in VA, a buck that size has clearly been drinking runoff water from a nuclear power plant, or maybe has access to steroids. If you eat it, you'd end up growing a third eye or something.

If that's the first deer I see then first buck taken. If that's the last buck for season then I'm tagged out

I'd be thinking same... with moisture this year, that deer is old enough he should be better... But my thinking is get him out of the herd.... Not save him for something that he'll never grow into IMHO.
Have you a clue on age? Hard to tell but I'd be thinking 4.5 ish for sure from the pic? If only that, there is a chance he could blossom in the next year or two but a low chance.
And typically wide equals short tines a lot of the time and that wont' change much with age.
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

How many times are we going to be shown nice bucks, and asked if we'd shoot them?
It's silly!
I'd shoot any legal buck. Let alone these bucks being shown.
Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

From here he looks mature, blocky, sorta swaybacked and loose skinned (hard to tell for sure)and the rack and body could be that of an older buck on the mend.I like to kill bucks like that... Agree with Jeff to get him out of the herd...Karnis,I'd kill him.

That buck doesn't live past 6:30am November 17th in Wisconsin. It's the 15th here, but no matter where I am that dude is DOWN!

The die has been set...21 or so inches wide...4 and a half or 5 and a half but short tines. He's all he's ever gonna be except maybe worse in a dry year. Have seen it a thousand times in south Texas. powdr
