Had been looking for a decent old 99 for about a year. Just really wanted a decent shooter. Was in a pawn shop the other day and they had 2. An 1899 in 250-3000 with straight stock, lots of checkering small forend and checkered also. "F" on the receiver under the forend. serial 2538XX. Tight with just a small sliver off the forend at the barrel and receiver. Very small split at the tang of the stock. I was all well and good with this and thought i had made a really great buy. Later i was doing more reading and notice the barrel has the Mass address on it. It does have the receiver, stock, forend, and butt plate matching numbers. Still might be a good shooter I hope.
The other and i bought it too is a really nice 99C pistol grip and checkered in 250-3000. Probably at 70-80% gun made in 1951. I think i just gave a bit to much, but that will hurt less in a few days. What do you guys think of what I've bought. Any concerns I should know?
Hmmmm, where do we start? How about with the "99C". Can you give us some pictures? The 99C was made much later than 1951 and has a detachable magazine.
Ah, the C on the front indicates it was made in 1951 but not the model. In 1951 they only made the 99EG with a schnabel forearm and the 99R with a fat, wide forearm with rounded end.
The first one sounds like a 99G with a later replacement barrel. Is the forearm held on with a latch and the buttstock has a pistol grip?
