bought a 24 S-d 22lr/20 ga at dallas market hall show yesterday. been looking for one for several yrs but the price has just been too high for any model 24 got this one for 275. the barrel under the forearm is stamped w/ O Q 9. no circle any where that i have found such as a 99 has. looked at the savage collecters site but not much on 24's there. anywhere i can go for info on possible manufacture date? the heel of the stock looks as if it is sunburnt or a solvent was left on the finish some surface rust on bbl here and there nothing bad. thanks for replies.

Somebody will chime in at some point. This might help in the meantime. http://savage24.com/

Serial number and I can date it.
The letters you posted from under the barrel are just assembly marks.

Yep, might be.
Should still have a date code stamped on it though. Take the buttstock off, might be stamped on the inside of the receiver.

rennie, I have three 'S' model 24's with date code as follows:
24S-A Date code (S=1965) stamped on left side of shotgun barrel about 1/2" in front of the receiver.
24S-E Date code (V=1968) stamped on right side of shotgun barrel about 1/2" in front of the receiver.
24S-D Date code (U=1967) stamped on both sides of the shotgun barrel about 1/2" in front of the reciever.
All date codes are the standard oval with two numbers and the letter. Get ahold of a magnifying glass and look real closely at both sides of the shotgun barrel near the receiver.
I also have a serial numbered 24S-E with similar stamping on both side of the shotgun barrel in the same place, but they are ovals with numbers and no letter. One side is 57 and the other side is poorly stamped but maybe 55. the serial number is on the lower left side of the receiver, close to the butt stock.
I hope this helps.
