Hello. New to the Forum. I joined because I'm seeking out Savage experts to hopefully help me in my quest. A friend of my father made it possible for my dad and his two boys to have 'a trip of a lifetime' a few years ago on an elk hunt. He wouldn't and still won't accept any form of repayment, even for expenses he bore, so we've all been looking for some way to 'pay' him for what he did for us. Well, he mentioned to dad that he has a friend that he is similarly is indebted to (not monetarily) and he's been looking for one of two elusive Savage model rifles to give to him. So, we're searching for, and willing to pay at least market price for a Model 99 in either 32:40 or 38:55. My brother checked Cabela's and they said that in their history, they've sold 4 of them and the last one was in stock for only a few hrs before it was gone. So, is this an impossible mission? If not, does anyone have any ideas or leads on such a rare rifle? Any help leading to a purchase is greatly appreciated and quite likely rewarded

I just happened to be the first to see this, so you will get much more information shortly. No it's not impossible. Folks here have them. Pending on model and condition they can be anywhere from quite affordable, to if you need to ask, you can't afford it. Good luck in your quest, Joe.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

Folks here have them, but they are not necessarily wanting to part with them. They are hard to find, and can be a bit pricey when you find one in good condition.
As others said, best bet is educate yourself on Savage 1899's in general and then watch online auction sites.
Good luck!

gunsamerica.com and gunbroker.com are two online auction sites. gun Broker has a better selection usually. I know some other folks will add to this list. Good for you for doing this!

I located a .32-40. It's a bit over our budget, priced at $3k. They said it was an 1899'CD' and it had the letter "S" and a serial number in the 100,000 range. She said it was a 'take down' model, but that doesn't seem to jive with what I see on http://www.savage99.com/models.htm. Could ya'll shed some light on this and advise if given this info, and assuming desirable condition whether it would be worth a $3k asking price?

A 1899 CD in 32-40 with condition is well worth $3000. IMO. A problem is that you need a factory letter to confirm it is a 1899 CD. They are rare to letter and 32-40 makes it even more desirable (and harder to find). See sticky above on how to obtain a factory letter. They did make the 1899 CD in a takedown model. Good luck.

Condition and the presence of any alterations are huge factors here.

Hey folks, just wanted to let you know we're still searching for the right one. We may grab the one on gunbroker that is ending tomorrow. Any new leads you may have are appreciated Needs to be all original .32-40 or .38-55 and at or under $2k.
