good concept - miniscule market share
I've become a Ruger fan because they've done a little better for us lefties in the last few years. I think the 375 Ruger is great, and I get the idea of the 300 & 338 RCM's. The 300 has too much to compete with, choice-wise but the 338 gives you a factory-fed 338-06 equal.
The rifles themselves are typical Ruger (stout and functional if not perfectly refined) and they seem like they'd point and handle nice in tight cover (I've handled a couple but don't own one.) It seems that they are the modern-day Remington 600.

Podunk...you dont want anything to do with it, but Ruger makes the compact mag type rifle in a .308...which could be skookum for you...

I can't tell you about the 300, but the 338 RCM in the SS Compact Magnum is a great little rifle. The ballistics that the short little 20" barrel produces are impressive. I like it enough so that if a SS 300 RCM Compact Magnum came along at the right price, I'd probably pick it up - even though I already have a 300 WSM. They're birds of a different color IMO.
I don't understand why Ruger isn't currently producing the SS versions of the Compact Magnum models. They also seemed to have dropped the SS "Sporter" in 223 with the laminated stock, another move that doesn't make sense to me. Maybe they've picked up marketing executives that formerly worked for Remington?
Some shooting knowledge: Don't stand in front of the muzzle. Some hunting knowledge: Too much noise ruins the hunt.

I expect some of the WSMs, especially the 270 since the only other 270 Magnum is the Weatherby, to be around for awhile. I don't see the RCMs still being around 5 years from now. I sympathize with the lefty thing. My oldest son is lefty, he's got a lefty BDL in 270 which is a very nice rifle and a very pricey lefty stainless/synthetic Winchester Classic in 416 Rem which I bought him this year for his finishing up with the Rangers gift. Outside of the Rem 700s and the Weatherby's not too many choices, particularly if you want CRF, for lefties.

Chuck

I have one and its a very fine cartridge as long as you don't try to make a WSM out of it.But I think its all about the "package" - compact short barrel well balanced. Its a great hunting gun and shoots great. The Hornady ammo is fantastic but pricey here in Australia. Performance wise the 300RCM is somewhere in between the 30-06 and the 300 WSM as you would expect from the relative case capacities.
I think Ruger inspired a new category of rifle - powerful hunting guns in a compact package. Have a look at the Sako Black Bear or the Sako Grizzly available in hard hitting calibre's such as 9.3 x62 etc.
The 338RCM has a following here for our Sambar Deer but the 300RCM is pretty much dead.
If you can get one at least you won't be part of the crowd!
