I've posted this in another forum as well. What I'm interested in finding out is if anyone out there has used or is using a 6.5X284 on elk-sized game? If so, what are your thoughts on it.
Please, no suggestions for other calibers, I'm just looking for some real-world experience with THIS particular caliber.

poke a light TSX through one and be done with it.....the 6.5 will penetrate like a dirty bastid and so will the TSX....sounds like a good combo, unless you are a gut shooter!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> 721

I have a 6.5-284, but have shot no elk with it. However, I Have shot Elk with the 6.5x55 and the 140 Partition, and It did the job just fine. Bull was about 165 yards out, quartering slightly away. One shot and he just wheeled looked, like he was going to go, and then he just collapsed in a heap. Bullet exited, so have no ideawhat it looked like. Lungs were seriously damaged. I have also taken a couple of Elk with the 264 Win Mag. [140 partition] See no reason why a well placed, decent bullet from a 6.5-284 wouldn't get the job done just fine. Regards, Eagleye.

I just picked up a 6.5-284 and would have no trouble slaying elk with it. I used a 6.5x55 last year to knock one over so see no reason not to trust the 6.5-284, it's just more of a good thing right? I used a 160gr. Sierra in the 6.5x55 last year, but will probably use a 120gr. TSX or 140gr. Hornady/Nosler in the 6.5-284.

I took a small cow 2 years ago with a 6.5-284 shooting 140 grain partitions. Shot was at about 50 yards in the shoulder. Bullet passed through both shoulders causing complete destruction of the heart and lungs in between. She ran about 5 yards before she piled up. I would not hesitate to do it all over again.

Just look at what they shoot moose with in northern Europe (6.5x55) you will do fine.

I shot a cow with a 130 gr Barnes X out of a 6.5-06 several years ago, at exactly the same velocities that my 6.5-284 now generates. Worked perfectly.

But I think we should not infer too much from the experience in Scandanavia using 6.5 bullets on moose. I have not hunted there, but traveled in the region some. Pretty thick, and much of it is purty darn flat. So I do not think the average ranges of moose shots are as long as we tend to shoot elk in the open west. Coastal Range elk in OR and WA would be another story, however.

6,5 mm is used for pretty much everything in scandinavia. The scandinavian moose is about the same size as an elk, so I think you are well equoied with this round. Especially if the elk shows at long range. Those 6,5 mm are really good long range bullets.

god bless any and all who love the 6.5 X 55. They have good sense and good taste. With 140 or 160 grn bullets, it's deadly. It is very accurate and a pleasure to shot. The Norweigens fill up the freezer every winter with it. Granted, the woods there are thick and shots are close.

Use it and enjoy.

6.5/284 should rip!
