Guys,

I know there are quite a few people who have modified their tents/tarps with a stove boot. My question is, does anyone know a place who will do this for me? Is it worth sending it out or should I just suck it up and sew it myself?

My opposition to doing it myself is primarily the fact that I just bought the SL5 and am not to keen on seeing it damaged before I get it in the field.

Thanks,
Major

Penny Schwynn of Specialty Outdoors would to a top job. I think she used to sew for Patrick Smith long ago.

Otherwise, have you had a good look at the tutorial on the Hill People Gear website?

It's not hard to do, even if your machine is not that great. You can always turn the balance wheel by hand to keep the timing correct. I find with heavy polyester upholstery thread, or with heavier sailing thread, the bobbin tension needs to be fairly loose, and the thread tension just the opposite, maxed out.

I think Kevin T at Seek Outside is doing this now. IIRC it was in a recent blog post. He's here on the forum.

Major,
I took my SL5 to a local wall tent/tarp company and he did it in a few minutes for 15 bucks. Thought I was crazy, claiming "that ain't no tent", but did it anyways. As long as you have the correct thread, anybody proficeint in sewing can do it.

I had Laurie Cantonwine in Vancouver, WA (Outdoor Garm. & Gear) do mine and she did another as well. Consider having her make removable vent covers for the top vents as well. Laurie used to do REI's local repairs and is very good. 360-254-9098.
