My friend Tim and I headed to central colorado for our annual DIY public land rifle elk hunt; this year taking our 14 year old boys on their first western hunt.
We did pretty well going 3 for 4 on bulls with both the boys scoring as well as me.
Day 1 was a wash as we got quite a dose of snow and fog. Day 2 brought blown chances and an all day stalk of a big 6x6 by me getting schooled in the dark timber by days end.
Day 3 Roman and I both connected on decent 5x5's followed by a great 6x6 for Tim's son on the 4th day.
For the looneys:
Roman used his 57 year old M70 .270 fwt, loaded with 130 TTSXs, he hit his bull a tad behind the lungs @ 250 yards, the bull bedded shortly after, then expired peacefully.
I used my M70 300 H&H/legend and 180 TTSXs, my bull took 2 through the lungs; 1 at 280 or so and a finisher @ 405. All our shots were complete pass-throughs with good blood letting.
A couple gear notes:
I managed a 50' roll and faceplant down a steep rockface, loosing my rifle along the way. After the tumbling was done my beat up swaro Z3 proved to hold zero and continues to be a great asset.
I love my kuiu attack pants which were great in all the varried conditions I encountered.
My new swaro el sv 10x42 were nothing short of amazing.
Finally, my 3 year old dozier knife has now done 5 elk and 6 deer, with yet to need a sharpening.
All in all a great hunt leaving Roman and I with memories we will cherish for many years to come.
