i have a nice 7x57 98 mauser i built for my 12 yr old,, 25 in featherweight barrel, with the wood stock and all the metal and scope this gun is pushing 9 lbs,, stock and bottom metal very heavy
wondering where i might purchase a lightweight stock ,,something along the lines of a remington mtn rifle pattern, thinner open grip, thinner forend,,, i will make it a blind magazine, the wood and bottom metal will be saved if he ever wants to change back,,,

Are you looking for a wood, laminate or synthetic stock? How much do you want to invest?
McMillan, Lone Wolf, Bansners all make lightweight synthetics...
Serengeti makes a lightweight laminate.
Depending on the wood density, you can select many different wood species for lightweight patterns, though with the popularity of lightweight mountain rifles, they can be expensive. If I remember correctly, the old 788's Remington made were made with birch stocks, which can be very lightweight for light recoiling rifles, such as the 7x57, but aren't pretty...
I found a ridiculously lightweight turkish walnut stock for my Hagn 7x75 vom Hofe, but turkish won't be cheap...

Wildcat composites do a Mauser stock for a very reasonable price. www.wildcatcomposites.com

McMillan Edge would be a good choice.

Adamjp; I've used two Wildcat blanks thus far and was very pleased with both of them. The stocks that Stuart makes and sells as a blank are very well built - again based upon two samples and talking to other owners of his stocks. To the OP, should you go with a Wildcat please understand that they aren't drop in and do require fitting/bedding. The Mauser stock however is an honest 20oz without a pad. Here's my current walking around gun, a money pit 98 with a Wildcat stock, 22" Featherweight contour barrel and way too many other parts added after that. For a 98 it did end up light though. Here's a better photo of the entire stock. Hopefully that was some use to someone out there and good luck to the OP on the build for his son's rifle. Regards, Dwayne

I put my Mauser 7x57 in a McMillan Edge. Works well.
