So my oldest son chose a first year Savage 110 in 243 to hunt with this year - his first deer hunt. He wanted a bolt action rather than one of those old, fuddy duddy lever actions. Sigh. So now I'm torn.. Really considering taking another early 110 in 270 that I just got from diamondjim to go up with. Be a nice matched set. Not taking a lever action feels like blasphemy though. Oh, the choices.. And will I even see a deer if I don't take the EG? Hmm... What are y'all taking up? Target for this year is the one in front - already told my son he's not allowed to shoot him.

These two will get the nod this year. Still got 30 days though. It'll be great to get back to Canuckistan........ Here's the "F" with the completed mount.

Dang, Rory...no EG!!! You are going to burn in you know where... I am taking a 99EG in 300 Savage and possbily my d/t'd 99K in 300 Sav or the 1899C in 30-30. Still 19 days to think about it. Maybe a bolt backup, but probably not. The only other possibility might be a 219 in 30-30. Who can tell this soon? BTW, let the kid shoot the big one.........

Take the EG for the first kill. To consider otherwise the bad Karma will spoil the season. Kiss the nice buck goodbye if you don't hunt the EG first. GW

BTW, let the kid shoot the big one......... Let him shoot the 270? Yeah, I guess I could let him do that. Actually I fully expect to shoot that sweet 5x5 opening morning myself, and then a much larger buck will come by for him. Lots of decent 4x4's around for him also, good starter bucks. Might still try to get that checkered/pistol grip SR in 303 to shoot better, I really want to take him out. Or the all-weather 250-3000 if it looks like rain or snow. Or the 30's 99R in 300 would be nice also.... Life was much easier before I met you guys.

LBK When you miss the first monster rack with that bottom gun and want to wrap it around a tree, give me a call first and I will save you a few dollars. GW

Don't you dare leave that EG home Rory. It's crazy to tempt fate by switching from a lucky rifle. Great looking guns LBK. That old Leupold looks just right in that mount. At this point I'm planning to spend almost the full two weeks in deer camp, with just a day back home for Thanksgiving. I'm planning to take three rifles, and this year only one is a Savage. Top is a Featherweight .300 that now wears a 4X Leupold I got from Diamond Jim. In the middle is a Ruger 77 International in .250 Savage with a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5X At the bottom is a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .257 Roberts with an old Leupold VX-II 2-7X. What if it rains, and I don't want to get one of those nice old guns wet? I've got a plan for that too. Rod

Hey Rod, Like your backup plan....nice and cozy and DRY!!! You guys have me thinking that maybe I should take this 99EG in 303 Savage and the Woolrich coat and the old Marbles knife out this year.....

Probably tote the 1899H .303 with heavy cast bullets again. If I'm gimped up as bad as I've been lately, I'll be leaning on a hiking staff most of the time, which means a rifle with a sling on it unfortunately. That'll mean one of the Mausers which is along for backup duty.

Our season started Saturday. Opening morning I was out with my pistol-grip, take-down, Marble tang sight 303 (not real conversant with all the letters like some of you boys). When it looks like rain I tend to leave the glass-sighted rifles home, just too much trouble. I love to hunt that old Savage...

taking 2 rifles with me; both savage barrel band carbines. One in 30-30 the other in 250.Going out with 250 first, since I got a nice buck with the 30-30 lastyear. Trouble is sometimes I'm shootin through brush, which makes my 250 questionable. No matter, gives me somethin to look at when I sit for awhile.

I'm gonna take two as well. My 308 EG and my dads 300 F. Good karma with those two in camp. My hunting pard takes 2 postmils, 300F and 308F.Safe to say there's more 99s in our camp than any other camp in FL.

No question, the 110 in 7mm-08, 99-375 is the back up plan.
