Does anyone know the OD of the traditional savage grooved barrel nuts? I'm under the impression that the new smooth nuts are 1.35"OD. The reason I ask, I was wondering if I could just purchase/make a smooth nut wrench that would also work on the savage grooved nuts? Thanks in advance. Shawn

My nuts measure 1.304".

That just doesn't sound good does it? grin

The wrench is available from http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ for $45.00. Personally, if I were to find a smooth nut on a rifle I wanted it would be replaced in a few minutes with the old style. Sometimes fashion doesn't trump practicality.

nsaqam, Thanks..that tells me one wrench won' fit both nuts. That is what I needed to know. WranglerJohn, I don't disagree...was trying to figure if one wrench would work on all styles. I would prefer not to use a pipe wrench on any rifle if at all possible!

On the Sharpshooters site look under "Tools"
The pics make it clear, one wrench for grooved nuts, rounded and squared. The other wrench for the smooth versions.

It still doesn't sound good, looking under "tools" for nut wrenches?
Sorry

Ok, so...how about building a wrench this is like the sharpshootersupply one for the smooth nut...1.35" on one end for smooth nuts and 1.305" on the other for all of the grooved nuts? if needed the smaller side could have a few half round reliefs to place drill bits in the relief and groove of the savage nut? Yes, I know I'm being cheap and difficult. My cousin is a machinist and can knock something like this out in the spare time of his day...

I try to eliminate the nuts on my Savages so a pipe wrench works for me.

If I wanted a wrench for a smooth nut Savage I'd take a hex nut for a 1" bolt, bore the ID to 1.35", drill a hole in one flat sized for a slight interference fit of a pin correctly sized for the hole in the barrel nut and use either a wrench or a pipe wrench on this nut.
Or weld a handle on the hex nut.
