NEWS FLASH!!!

The Idaho Fish & Game wants to kill 51 wolves along the MT border to protect the elk. Of course, the feds still control the whole thing regardless of what they say. The wolves are still under the ESA so Idaho really can't contol anything.

Even if the feds allow the wolves to be killed, we have to pay state hunters to shoot them. If hunting was allowed, it'd be easy to find 51 hunters who'd gladly pay $500 for a tag. That way the state would make $25,000 instead of paying out that much.

We have the same thing going on here in Michigan. Reintroduced into the UP, they are now in the Northern Lower also. We didn't have enough deer in the UP as it was. Now they are way down. I know the locals have taken it into their own hands. Some of the wolves are collared and the DNR picks up signals every so often from a river, go figure. Kind of a different version of SSS shoot, sink, and shutup.

Yep. And that's $25K that could be spent in help in elk recovery. They'll likely just raise the price of you elk tags instead. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I consider John Watts a personal friend and I know of no time when he has ever sided against hunters. John is one of the F&G board members. I don't believe the individuals bashing the Idaho Fish & Game board understand the limitations they must operate within. The board has pushed hard for control of the wolf population but are up against the feds. If you have details where the board has made bad decisions then please share them. Please don't waste everyone time blaming an organization that is on the hunters side.

You can't blame the IDFG for this one. They've been handed a mess. They have to manage the wolves. They have to spend our license money to do it, leaving less money for managing other species. And they're prohibited by the ESA from killing the wolves that are the whole problem. This is a situation created and propogated by a bunch of anti's in the federal government.

Normally, I'm a very law-abiding man, BUTTTTTTTTT... sometimes the "law" simply isn't "just"... or it doesn't really "serve" the People, but rather restricts them.

If I lived where the re-introduced wolves were doing "harm", killing my stock, etc... and immediate action needed to be taken, well...

Like Gen. Patton said in his speech to his men concerning their bravery and willingness to fight the enemy, "[color:"blue"]Now some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you'll chicken out under fire. Don't worry about it. I can assure you that you'll all do your duty.

The Nazis are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill their blood, shoot them in the belly. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo, that a moment before was your best friends face, YOU'LL KNOW WHAT TO DO![color:"/"]"

Seems to me that what has to be done is obvious. Like Patton said, "... [color:"red"]YOU'LL KNOW WHAT TO DO![color:"/"]"

Strength & Honor...

I thought the hold up was Wyoming. If they came up with an acceptable wolf management plan, then the MT, ID, and WY would get management control.

WY was the holdup for a long time. That problem has been resolved, though. Gale Norton was in Boise a couple weeks ago for a ceremony where she signed it all over to Kempthorn. Idaho now has complete responsibility for wolf management...except for federal rules which prevent Idaho from managing them. What it comes down to is Idaho sportsmen now have to pay the bill for raising wolves instead of the feds.

WY's original plan was that they'd set aside a large area for wolves which would include Yellowstone and the Tetons, of course. Any wolf that left that area was a rug. The feds didn't like it. I thought it was the most sensible plan I'd heard.

There are several ranchers/outfitters along the border (yellowstone) at gardner and they have been reporting for years now that they have seen few if any calves with the elk herds. These guys spend 5-7 days in the backcountry at a time and have a much better idea on elk survival than our fish and game.
Many of them have gone out of business.
When they first "introduced" these wolve sto the Park they assured us that the wolves would stay in the park where the food source was located.
After most of Montana, and I'm sure Idaho and Wyoming got over their choking spells I'm almost positive I heard a collective burst of unbelieving laughter....
That's the problem with those airheads in Washington-they believe they are the only ones with any sense and the rest of us are blithering fools.
One fool said that don't worry , if the wolves become aproblem the elk will move out of that particular drainage and go to one that doesn't have any wolves. I'm serious.

I said: "Oh yeah, I can see them now. The wolves get up one morning and look about , starving, hungry for fresh elk.
"Uh, hey-one says- where are all the elk?"
The other wolves rush around, sniffing, getting frantic.
"Look, the elk have left-they moved into the next drainage, where there are no wolves.?
"Oh no, now what are we going to do? We'll all starve, those damn crafty elk anway.
Fast forward a week- all the wolves are now starving, getting weak, just skin and bones....Some barely able to walk, a few even on crutches.
"Who ever thought we'd be beaten by a bunch of dumb elk-we shoulda stayed in Canada."
And the elk herd was saved and flourished and the wolves, unable to follow the elk into the next valley, all died.. and the coyotes rejoiced.

The two people who I shared my theory with were not appreciative of the irony and walked away in a huff.
And if you've even tried to walk in a huff you know how hard that is to pull off..

I have a degree in wildlife from Penn State and a degree in Forestry Biology from the Univ Of Montana and I really get po'd when some clown that is going to school or working here from somewhere back east immediately decides that just because I/we live here that we are somehow unable to string enough words together to make a coherent sentence.. much less be able to understand their particular line of bull$hit for exactly what it is.
So- If I give them a little back at times-they certainly deserve it.

Great thread leep. I'm just tired of people who don't live here deciding the way things should be here. We didn't have wolves and everything was fine, we don't need them now, but we have them because people back east thought we should.
