I have been wanting a big bore for a while now, and the 416 Rigby has tweeked my drool glands sufficiently to give it serious consideration. I saw one in a Ruger#1 Tropical the other day, and the seller had installed a Simms Limbsaver on it. He said it smoothed out the otherwise "stiff" recoil of the round.

QUESTION: Have any of you guys got any experience with the 416 in a #1 Tropical (9 pounds)?

QUESTION: Has anyone got any personal experience with the Limbsaver on a stout recoiling rifle.

I have read the dope on the Simms site. I want some real life info here. Do you think that the 416 in a 9 pound rifle is going to pound me, or will it be manageable with the premium pad. Apparently they also make the Remington R3 pad.

Thanks for any info you provide.

I have he Limbsaver pad on all my rifles and the biggest I have is a 375 Ultra Mag. It definately reduces felt recoil. How much I dont know but I can sure tell the difference. I think the 416 will pound you even with the pad but not as bad as without it.

I have the Limbsaver pad on several rifles and my shotgun. Luvem, BUT a 9 pound 416 Rigby will smack you around but good, regardless. Plus, I do not favor a single shot for dangerous game which is the .416's forte'. I, too really like the .416 Rigby but if you are asking me, start looking for a CZ550 or a Ruger 77Magnum and have the saftey upgraded on either. And yes, put the limbsaver on it! Good luck.

Shootist,
I started out by putting my first Limbsaver on my 500 Jeffery, it weighs 11 lb neat, it tamed it down considerably, it still comes back at you hard, but not quite as sharp.
Long story short, I now have Limbsavers on my 450 Ackley Mag, 375 H&H and my 300 H&H as well.
The only downside to a limbsaver is the grinding of them, you or your gunsmith will have a job in front of you, they don't gring that well, tend to be a bit "furry". Freezing them before hand helps, as does a fine disc on the sander and copious amounts of WD-40 to stop it clogging.
Regarding the 416, I've got a mate who has one, no scope just bare rifle, it does kick, but not ridiculous, if you can handle a 458 Win Mag OK, then a 416 will be a bit more, but you can get used to it with a little practice.

Have a LimbSaver on a 358 Norma Mag. I am 5'7", and have shot 30 rounds thru it on the bench with no pain. It seems to work.

The effect of recoil pads is about like the difference between getting hit with bare knuckles and a soft cushioned glove. If you had to get hit with one or the other, the glove is the better pic. The Limbsaver, Decelerator and Kick Eez pads are definitely a good addition to any rifle that kicks much. I went from getting a bruise on my shoulder from shooting 140 rds. of 12 ga. on a sporting clays range, to complete comfort after the same, just by adding a soft Decelerator pad to my gun, and vented extended choke tubes.

I refuse to use a muzzle break on rifles, though, because I've already got a good case of tinitis, and don't want it to get any worse. All hearing damage is pretty well permanent, and I'd rather take a bit of extra recoil, or put a lead shot filled sissy bag on my shoulder, than deal with the muzzle blast from a good break.

I like the Decelerator #752B on classic styled stocks, in black usually. Just looks better, and though the Simms and Kick Eez pads absorb a smidge more recoil, IMO, I stick with the Decelerator for the looks. The difference in recoil absorption just isn't great enough to make me exchange that for the great looks of the 752B. I also suspect that the 752B MAY (?) retain its springiness a bit longer over time than the other two, and MAY (?) not take a "set" as quickly as the other two, but I could well be wrong about that. Can anyone comment on that aspect of the trio?

I have no experience with the Simms pads, but I have a No.1 in 416 Rigby and it is my favorite rifle. From the bench, full throttle 400gr loads will let you know you just touched off something big. From field positions, offhand, etc...not that bad. I have a Decellerator on my stock...makes a huge difference in felt recoil. I also wear a PAST recoil shield, which helps a lot, too. You have to handload this round anyway, unless you have very deep pockets. Most of the time I shoot "starting loads" and it is comfy to shoot many times. The recoil of the 416 is much quicker than my other No1 in 500 Nitro. That gun is a big shove. They are fun guns...and with lighter bullets of 350gr are a lot more fun. Go for it!

I've been looking to put a Limbsaver pad on my M-7 in 358. None of the screw'em on models of Limbsaver list the M-7 as a replacement. What model must I get that I can attach? Also, any insight as to how to remove the factory pad from the M-7 stock ?

Maybe when he put the muzzle brake on the barrel it broke his muzzle, and so it truly would be a muzzle break. Musta hurt though, when he breaked his muzzle.

I put a Limbsaver on my win 95 in 405 , and it works just like the ads said it would. Had to down load the templates and find the one that was closest fit, and ended up just having to take a smidge off on side of the comb and another smidge off the other side on the toe.

Try this one or google up the simms limbsaver

www.limbsaver.com

For a remmy model 7 the Simms product # is 10112, and that is the precision fit model -- just stick it on and go shooting.

I ordered up a #1 416 Rigby shortly after they came out and traded it off in '03. I shot it for the first 10 years with the factory butt plate and a PAST recoil shield strapped on. Frequently I had it reduced with only 90 gr of IMR 4831 behind a 400 gr Hornady. Power was on par with a 404 Jefferey and the recoil felt similar to my M70 338 Win. The last couple of years that I had the gun it had Limbsaver on it. I got it for $10 in Cabela's Bargain Cave. Best $10 I ever spent!! The gun still moved, but it took the nastiest part of the sting out of it. I'd definitely put it on your #1. I liked it well enough to put one on my 444 too. So, is the gun going to pound you? Yep. It is a 416. The reduced loads are very manageable though. I only shot my reduced loads with the 400 gr bullets because I got a ton of them cheap when the local Gander Mtn. was clearing them out. Those 350gr loads may be quite agreeable. But if you start itching to see what that big, sexy case can really do if it's full of powder...hold on!

Thanks for the input. I'm going to see if I can get a deal on the rifle today. It has a Limbsaver installed already. Decisions - decisions - decisions.

This is good to hear.
I had the 'R3' pad installed on my 'Arylon Synthetic' Remington stock, which houses my new/unfired 700 / .375 ULTRA MAG Remington rifle-action.
It took some doing to get the old pressed-in factory recoil pad out of the stock, and the new one is 'GORILLA GLUED' in there now.
I've had the rifle for a couple of years now and just haven't gotten it out to fire it yet!
I must admit I've had reservations about it, but I don't any longer.
If everything goes well, I'll be taking the rifle in to have the scope mounting holes drilled to 8-40 and the 'J-Lock' R&R'd with a new part.

I put the SVL pad on my Marlin / .45-70, too. Had to do a bit of hot rodding to get the holes mounted, but it looks 'OK'.
The reason for replacing the factory pad with the SVL is because I'm going to stuff in some Buffalo Bore and Garrett Cartridges ammo, whatever the biggest and baddest is in .45-70.

If THAT goes well, I may look into more SVL pads for other guns.

Has anyone had problems with them being "grabby" on clothing? That concerns me.
