I choose the 280 Ackley Imp. What are your choices? And Why? (Deer in the 150-250 pound range)

.270 Winchester.

Why? Ammo everywhere trumps the relatively slight exterior ballistic differences between it and the .25-06 (or your .280 Ackley).

BTW, best magnum long-range deer round is the Roy. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

If I chose say the 270 WSM how would our rifles differ? In other words what would it matter?

25-06. without a doubt. The only thing that's any better would be the 257 Weatherby.

Hell, I'd take my standard .280 over the .270. I can get 3150 with a 140 gr. bullet. 270 WSM is considered a magnum (see above) After the 130 gr. standard .270 bullet that everyone shoots it has really no comparison. The 280 Ackley can get 3250 with the same 140 gr. pill and has room to grow with heavier bullets if need be.

.280 Remington with my handload of 139 grains Hornady Interlock bullet, and a healthy dose of IMR 4350.

7mm-08 with hornady 139 grain SP's light magnums at 3,000 FPS. Took a deer at over 500 yards this year -that long enough? The deer hunched dropped on its side and rolled down the hill - stone dead. My brother is now getting rid of his 270WSM.

What = the one you can ACCURATELY shoot at any distance

Why = misses don't count & caliber has no effect in empty air

270, 280, 7-08, 308, 30-06, etc, etc, etc. They will all reach 3,000 fps +/- with comporable bullets, comporable ballistics, and comporable killing power. For good reading, I suggest the attached link. Great article. http://www.kifaru.net/posimag.htm

I don't know about the best, but the 270 is darned effective, and doubles as a good elk/sheep round.

OK grasshopper;
for starters the question was somewhat generic so I answered same, however in answer to your "comments";
"Cant shoot well"; compared to Michelle Gallager, no, but then neither do you. USMC Expert rifleman, Member of one mile club at D&L Sports, primary sniper on SRT until age & asthma fixed me up, partner & I won team vs. team shootoff at the ITRC this year. not too bad I don't think. Do better? bring your money & we'll try 10 shots @$100 a shot @ 1800 yds.
Miss a lot? not a lot, but being human I do, & being secure in my manhood I have no trouble 'fessing up. How ' bout you?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

6.5 30-06 improved.

Never tried it but it sure looks mighty fine on paper.

Will build one someday and let you all know!

DOn't know about the "improved" version, but my 6.5/06 is my NRA long range (1000yd) and tactical competition rifle. Very accurate & whacks steel to 1000+ nicely, no doubt as to a hit.

Answer the Gun Writers 7mm-08 best all around cartridge.

Below are statements made by famous gun writers in the magazines.

The flat shooting 25-06 is the best for antelope hunting in opening country.
Answer: The 7mm-08 120 GR handloads shoot flatter than 120 GR 25-06 factory loads! With 120 GR 25-06 handloads, the 25-06 and 7mm-08 are ballistic twins!

The 30-06 will handle all North American big game except for the large bears.
Answer: The 7mm-08 is flatter shooting with equal energy and 40% less recoil than the 30-06!

The 270 Winchester is the best all-around rifle. For varmits, up to the largest deer species, the 270 can't be beat!
Answer: The 7mm-08 is the ballistic twin of the 270. The 7mm-08 has less recoil for varmit shooting, and will handle bigger bullets for the largest game. The 7mm-08 uses less powder and inherits the tack driving accuracy of the 308 Winchester.

The 280 Remington might unseat the 270 Winchester as the best all-around hunting cartridge.
Answer: The 280 factory loads are made for older pump action and auto-loading rifles and fall far below the performance levels of the 7mm-08 handloads.
