I really like the 7-08, but some of those "famous writers" don't know what they're talking about.

As much as I like the 7-08, it is not the balistic twin of a .270 in equal lenght barrels.

The .270 will better the 7-08 by 150-200 fps with bullets of equal weight and equal length barrels.

YES IT IS WHEN THE 270 IS SHOOTING A 140 GRAIN BULLET,AND THATS SAYING ALOT WHEN YOU ARE COMPARING A LONG ACTION WITH A SHORT ACTION.
PLUS ITS SHORT ACTION FOR FASTER CYCLING,AND I WOULD SAY MORE EASIER TO SHOOT CAUSE LESS RECOIL,WHICH RESULTS IN BETTER SHOOTING IN MOST CASES.

Charlie ,

Take a pill!! Targets and animals are two completely different subjects. I know guys who are incredible at the range, but get them trying to kill somthing and they fall all to pieces. Tony Boyer is the best in the business for all around BR, that doesnt make him the best all around long range shot in the woods. The question was which "caliber" not "shooter".

Thanks
Kevin

Trophytaker The gunwas a Kimber 84m topped with a lowly VX-1 3x9. I placed the cross hair about 1 foot over the topline and let her fly. Hold-over combined with the uphill shot resulted in a double lung somewhat low behind the shoulder. I had done a lot of practice at long ranges prior to the shot-at pretty small targets (paper plates, chinet) so I had a pretty good feel for how the cartridge performed between 300 and 450 or so. I know the Hornady's are not truly 3,000FPS at least according to all who have chron'd them. But they perform well in the range of max handload spec's. I havent found a handload yet that is better. But, I just finished loading up some Nosler 140gr BT's with 48grains of H4350 (max) to see how they do. I started with 44 grains and have worked through to 46 earlier in the season. But I ran out of time to experiment and just went with the Hornady's this year. I will make a trip to the range and see how these new nosler loads work. I have also toyed a bit with bullet seating - so we'll see. I'm thinking the gun just like the dimesions of the hornady's so I have duplicated that. Hornady sez I should get 2860fps. I have always had very good accuracy with Nosler BT's in other cartridges. But the factory fodder Federal Premium nosler 140Gr loads I tried were the worst out of the Kimber yet. And, I noticed that Federal seated these bullets deeper than any other ammo -both factory and handloads that I've tried yet. So, I brought the bullet up a bit. The Federal factory Nosler over-all length is 2.6" these new nosler handloads are at 2.76. I think the kimber like em closer to the lands or something because the bullets that have done the best all had an overall length of 2.7 and above.

I have to cast another vote for the 280 Ackley. Mild recoil, flat shooting and makes Elk very unhappy with 160's. Great for pronghorn with 120's as well.

& as I said before the "ac from ar" type comment, the best cartridge is the one the SHOOTER is most competent with.I believe one of our members has a signature that states quite accurately something to the effect that the best bullet in the world does no good if it does not hit the proper place, or words to that effect. In other words the best CARTRIDGE is the one the shooter can hit with. I.E. if anything over 25 caliber gives you the heebie jeebies, then the best long range cartridge FOR THAT SHOOTER would be smaller than a 25. If the shooter can shoot a 460 weatherby and never bat an eye, well the sky is the limit. THAT is what I was talking about.
after 50+ years of shooting I am well aware of the difference between paper & live flesh.
One nice thing about getting old is you finally figure out you do not need to take smart A** cr** from people.
offer still stands. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

....Check out the 6.5X284, Norma has made this wildcat a factory loading. It is a caliber that is THE current sweetheart cartridge of the 1000 meter boys, and has more than enough punch on deer sized game at very extended range..... Still few hunters should shoot at game beyond 300 yards or so,and even those shots should ALWAYS require a rest!

My vote: .280Rem with 139s/140s or 150s/154s at about 3000-3150fps.

Charlie has a very valid point; it's which ever round the shooter handles best and feels most comfortable and confident in using.

The long-range, non-magnum choices in factory guise run from .220 Swift up through the '06 family (.25-06, .270, .280, and '06). They're never a wrong choice.

Wildcats equal the factory magnums easily. The 6/06 and 6.5/06, as well as their 284 based cousins, do it all well, and AI'ing them adds a little more gas.

Which one would I pick?

.270AI. Two reasons. The AI gives me .270Roy ballistics loaded up, and that ain't none to shabby, and the availability of .270 ammo everywhere means that my hunt can keep going even if Mr. Murphy runs off with my ammo.

Of course, that's just my pick. And, like the .270/.280/.30-06 questions, there is no wrong answer.
