I was out shooting last weekend and just wanted to verify point of impact with more of a hunting hold. I had my rest just in front of the barrel shank and a rear bag bunched under the stock. I put a good hunting grip on the forearm and wrist of the stock and shot three rifles 3 shots each. My groups were as follows (measured center to center)

300wsm .56
7mm08. ..72
.243. .635

When I shoot these guns and just let them recoil with no hold on the forearm groups tend to be an inch or bigger (especially the 300 and 7mm08) I guess I've never seen my groups improve so much across the board with multiple rifles with such a simple change in form. When I usually hold the forearm I've used an oversized bag but I got to thinking the sling studs were affecting my shots.

What say you....how do you hold your hunting weight rifles.

7# 300 WSM with a max load of H4350 under a 200gr. Partition. I hold on to that sucker. Tried the free recoil thing and my Montana shot like chit.

Free recoil needs to be just that. Holding lightly means there will be differences shot to shot. Consistant hold is what is necessary for accuracy.

And it's closer to what you will be doing in the field, most likely. Why practice something you won't be using?

What were the points of impact? Had the rifles stayed sighted in?

In my view hunting rifles are to hit with the first shot and perhaps a follow up shot if needed.

I try to shoot hunting rifles by holding and or resting them the same way that I would shoot them in the field at game.

All guns should be locked up when not in use!

I do the same to ensure that my POI is correct for a more or less normal, rested hunting hold.
