shoulder or neck. a 100 yard run almost always means a 100 yard run away from the truck.

Myself, I just automatically go right the the back edge of the shoulder. I suppose it's the way I was brought up, to aim for the middle of vitals for the most margin for placement error. If the angle calls for it, I'll certainly enter or exit on a shoulder and often do, but I very rarely try to hit both shoulders on a broadside presentation.

JPro,

I was taught to place shots exactly like you do, and that's what I strive to do. The exception is pigs. I'll shoot them as described if able, but if not, I'll put a hole wherever the crosshairs land on the pig.

Depends on where they might end up if they don't drop quickly. If they can run into a ravine or the darkest briar patch around they'll get one through the shoulder.

Shoulder shot if I don't want him to run because of darkness or fog. Lung shots bleed the deer and I can tell the difference in the taste of the meat. A shoulder shot deer tastes a bit like like liver.

I think everyone takes what they're offered, but thanks for reminding everyone of the obvious. grin

The question was do you go for lungs or shoulder, if given an opportunity at both...

We talk about shoulders versus lungs, but I suppose we never really know what might happen, regardless of where you stick it. I took the girls out yesterday evening after school and Kate shot another big doe with her 7mm-08. She was quartering toward us a bit, giving us the staredown, when I told Kate to shoot or we were about to be busted. She whispered that she was going for the middle of the shoulder and then fired.

They found blood easily enough, as that doe had been homing in on the rice bran we'd poured out.

Blood was there, but quickly turned to just a drop every few yards. I was thinking that her 140gr light load may not have exited. After two hours of hands and knees trailing in the thickets, I found her about 80 yards out. The hit was right through the middle of the shoulder, but missing bone, and exiting in the back of the offside ribs, with the guts practically sealing off the hole. That explained our lack of a good blood trail, even though the shot was dead on and went through a lot of vitals. I explained to her that you really never know what is going to happen after the shot, as they might fall, they might run, they may bleed or they may not; you just get it through the vitals as best you can.

Lungs/ Vitals unless I think it will jump the fence onto someone else's property, then it's a shoulder shot.
