I read an article about hunting clubs, where the author argued that due to human nature the club that was most likely to be successful long-term was the one that had a benevolent dictator (yet I know, oxymoron) . His view was that a club is formed by the "Pioneers" who work hard to form a system that allows them the best opportunity for a satisfying experience.

Once the club has been up and running for a while there will likely come a time when they will need to accept new members (ie the settlers) in order for the club to survive. Issues will naturally arise. The thread on deer hunting with hounds is a good illustration of the conflict that can be expected as times change.

In addition to the vast amount of outdoor related knowledge that is shared here, I enjoy the largely civil nature of our discussions. Neither Rick or Art appear to need to put their moderator hats on very often. I like that.

I know that I can be a pretty opinionated guy at times. I have a sense that there are some fairly new posters arriving that view the world quite differently than I do. That is fine and to be expected. Because I value the general atmosphere of this message board, I am going to make an effort to "step away from the keyboard" for a while the next time I get a sense that someone is intentionally trying to throw rocks at a Hornets nest. Who knows, I might be wrong...and time will tell.

On an especially happy note, I have the rest of the afternoon off and I am headed for the squirrel Woods. Pontification mode off

2ndwind--

I like your post and I agree.

IMO part of the problem is that some posters really believe that they have the only answer. We see this in all areas of our lives--at 79 I realize how few answers I have.

Then, some people just like to stir the pot to see the results.

There is no reason why we can't be civil, regardless.

I believe everyone here is entitled to their own opinion...

Of course, sometimes their "opinion" is pretty "far out"... or, in a few cases, just plain "wrong".

But "wrong" is in the eyes-of-the-beholder in many cases, so I never get involved in a "fuss" with anyone in these Forums... I just say that I believe to be try and if I don't really "know" something, I admit it.

After all, we're all here out of our own choice to enjoy ourselves and learn something we didn't know before... or help someone else learn something they didn't know before.

I've had a few guys here "jump" on my case for expressing my opinions or thought... and I just let 'em yell and scream. After all, they're not paying my bills, so I don't really have to "care" if they think I'm an idiot.

But I think 2ndwind and Muddywaters pretty well got the right idea... just enjoy your time here and don't make any enemies over just "opinions"... it's really NOT worth it.

Some people (myself included) are just going to have to come to grips with the fact that not everyone shares the same views. I still hope we could all get along and avoid the name calling. After all even I can see the humor in blammers post! Like you I greatly appreciate the fact that we are left un-moderated to sort things out. I firmly believe this is one of the best sites on the net. If I offended anyone with a singular exception I sincerely apolagize.

When I first came to the site I was attacked very vehemently by an individual over an opinion in which I thought to have validity.I quickly learned some people are easily offended by one's opinion.I even went so far as to have the post removed as I was somewhat embarassed what others might think of this new poster.I've since learned the man's emotions can be provoked very easily on certain subjects...especially Ackley cartridges.I thought at first he was just a hothead and almost left the forum but since I've learned he is just passionate about guns and reloading.I'm glad I didn't leave the forum as it has brought me many nights of enjoyment and a great deal of knowledge. The guy is funny and witty and I now enjoy his posts. He later apologized and I think that is the sign of a very big man.I'm glad cause I'm still here and learning things it would take me a lifetime to otherwise learn on my own. There are some great guys on this forum with a wealth of information that can save a man a lot of time and trouble... but I am careful what I say now!

I hear that. Hell, right now over on the Africa Hunting board some regulars are just ripping up some newcomer. I must have missed something within his first few posts, because he seems potite enough, but he sure as hell rubbed the regulars over there the wrong way. Everytime he opens his mouth he has a pack of wolves tearing him up, disecting anything he says.

Well, maybe I can relate, being a CA guy and having some different views I took a bit of a shalacking too, but hey I think some eventually agreed to disagreee & accepted I wasn't out trolling.

2ndwind,
I've been thinking about this since you posted ...
Angry is always in the eye of the beholder...like beauty .
There are some here that are unflappable-Barak
There are also some hotheads-Me
The Alaska guys are a hoot..even though Stick's vernacular escapes me most of the time...(where's my Stickionary?)
The girl thang was rocky at first and at times later,but...
This is a place where some come to escape, vent, show off,learn,ect....
The best example of how to navigate the Campfire, good or bad, pretty much anything is JJHACK.
I've read his post's for a couple of years now and I don't know
how he does it. He corrected someone very recently, with respect, and reminded him that this was a friedly forum.
SitkaDeer is also someone that that is good natured as well as a good communicator that makes things, here, different than other sites.
There are many others here that make this place very special that don't come to mind rite now.I feel guilty now not naming...Boggy,TLEE,Teal,VAnimrod,SteveNO,Bullwnkl,Flinch,
Spike,TheGirls,needone,SU35,Aggiedog,Avagadro,Steelhead,Jed,and on and on and on.
My point is that angry...aint always...angry...Sir?...Don't call me sir!
I like this place...
Bart

If this is the situation I think it is, what you missed is the fact that the poor misunderstood newcomer came on line & basically said that anyone who did not agree with him was an inexperienced phoney. & yes he did get whacked, also requested to provide some bonafides to support his claim of superior hunting skills & knowledge. none were forthcoming.

My take on the angry posts is to pretty much ignore them. I've been known to go off on verbal tirades that I later regretted. While trying to type a reply, I several times have deleted same rather than adding fuel to the fire of a particularly irritating (to me) thread. And no matter what I think, everyone's entitled to prove him- or herself either wise or foolish.

Most people don't have a problem with others having a differing opinion. The "war" starts when they make laws
that inflict that opinion on the rest of us. You cannot legislate
acceptance either!

I, for one, am appalled at the laws which take a non-accepting
view and call it a "hate crime"!

The streets are one day going to run red with spilled blood
if america continues down this path! This is an issue of
FREEDOM, not one of differing opinions.

Sadly, the stupid sheeple in this country cannot see that!

Angry posts are a better alternative to physical violence?

Thats an interesting perspective Don. Sounds a little......Angry? If you think your free try walking in the deli and whizzin on the cheese. Every law has people who oppose it. Gladly the political process still functions and the majority rules. No matter what "the stupid sheople" think or more precisly those who don't agree with you.

Hey... I resemble that remark!!! (at least I acknowledge that I am opinionated) BTW, I would dearly love to have a video clip of you performing your, hunting in sneakers... during an ice storm, ballet moves for the other deer that got away

Angry? Yes. I'm familiar with the constitution and
the freedom erosion PC has caused.

You a LIBERAL? I can tell from your post that you think
the majority is supposed to rule, whereas I'm a constitutionalist, or libertarian.

But if you think the present systems work. Your beliefs
don't matter....you fall into the stupid sheeple group!

My america is dead. When the enemy comes to destroy yours, don't expect people like me to defend it for you.
I simply won't care! Truth to be told, I rather speak Chineese than liberaleese anyway.

Yes, I'm angry, but that's slowly being replaced with apathy.
The violence, sir is going to come from the outside with little objection from those of us who have become apathetic.

A good example was the terroist attack on New York city.
I was not angered by the attack. I was disappointed
they didn't level the whole damn liberal place though!

It's easy to tell the wise people, just look for the names that DON'T appear on the angry post threads.

(Which raises an interesting point of irony with my own handle appearing here. )

I'm an American. I'm not defined by any singular party. Saying the presant system doesn't work is a pretty broad simplistic statement even though I agree with you. Was majority rule not the order of the day for the last 200 years? Do I think angry posts are better than violence? I guess that depends on if you only see anger on the side you don't agree with. More importantly why cant people find a way to dissagree without resulting to angry vulgarities?
