Hi all, I'm in the process of building a 358 win and was thinking of a Sako L579 as the action to use. I've done this before a couple of times so I'm pretty familiar with the L579, so Istarted to think that it might be time to try something "new" (to me that is). I've used rem 700 before as well but for some reason the pushfeed version of the Win 70 is not that popular as a base for these project, how come?
I do have a couple of questions regarding the action and the project as I'm sort of a noob again which BTW feel great!
What kind of COL would the typical magazine box of one of these SA win 70 allow me to use?
I'm used to the Sako Classic stock from mcMillan and it fits me really great, what McMillan stock would be similar and fit the Win 70?

Another question, I've found a bargain win 70 in 308 with the "Blind bottom" would it be possible to transform that into a detachable magazine solution and who if any can supply the parts for that conversion?
Best Regards,
Henrik

Post 64 push-feed I take it? Is it a later true short action, or a long action that's blocked off that you'll be using? This is mine ... a beat-up pushfeed M70FWT that was in 243Win and I converted to 358Win using a #3 contoured barrel. My first 358Win, it introduced me to the beauty of the 35cals. I used a 1:14" barrel, but would have gone a 1:12" if available at the time. As is, the only projectile it wont stabilise is the Woodleigh 310gr soft. COL with the block in the rear of the magazine is a smidgin' over 2.8" which is plenty for most projectiles. Toyed with converting it to a 35WhelenAI to use up the long action, but just love it as is. The push-feed M70s are hidden gems, everyone wants CRF which keeps these nice and cheap. Cheers... Con

I believe we went over this push-feed vs CFR feed issue in another thread a year or two ago. The post-64 push feed M70 actions are some of the smoothest fasting cycling production actions made in America and are indeed "hidden gems".

Yes, I'm talking about the post -64 win 70. I'm currently looking at a couple of different candidates so I'm not 100% sure how old it will be.
The reason behind this thread wasn't to discuss "CRF vs PF" but instead to discuss the merits or shortcomings of the "Post -64 PF" on its own.
Actually the two main questions for me are what stock I should use and the possibilty to transform the gun to a SA DBM. The only solution that I've found that seems viable is the CDI bottom metal but I'm not looking for a tactical solution so I'm at best lukewarm to that solution.

I've owned two, one a .243 and the other a .300 WinMag, both excellent shooters.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that there are two kinds of post-64 actions, the post-64 and the post-68. Only the latter has the anti-bind feature in the right action lug.
I used one as the basis for a match rifle once, and the only complaint I had with it was a tendency to allow the third round to pop out of the magazine during rapid fire. Unlike the pre-64, the post-64 action has the feed lips built into the magazine box instead of being part of the receiver.
Otherwise it is a very slick action with a lot of potential accuracy.

I've run quite a few post68 PFs, in long and short. They are a very nice action, with the anti-bind feature.
Short action has a 3.0 inch box if you take the block out (maybe it goes 3.1 even, I'm not sure without pulling one out).
Long action is full H&H length.
If you like the Sako Classic stock, maybe Mickey will inlet one for the Winchester. The Sako Classic is a better design than the one labeled Winchester Classic.
