The Model 14 is a short action. The Model 114 is a long action, and is offered in .30/06.

Oops, wasn't paying attention on the model number.

another thought about the accutrigger.... anyone use one in cold climates? I'm wondering whether you'd feel the safety blade thing through gloves. It's usually about -10 celcius or so during deer season here, so I usually wear a light knitted type glove on the trigger hand, and a warmer mitt on the other hand.

I'll have to remember to bring the gloves when I go shoppin'

Here's a pic of a old Savage I picked up used for $199. I believe it's a late 60's rifle. It didn't shoot great so I had it rebarrled to 280. I kept the original contour to match the barrel channel. Shortly afterwards I dropped it on it's butt and a butt screw acted like a wedge and split it. Yea I know....... I'm restocking it now with a richards old classic in their version of exhib english. Please don't ask me why I do these things. It was neat find, even if a Savage and I ruined it.

I saw one at Bluewater Bait in Bemidji last weekend. Beautiful. My only complaint is they don't offer the 114 in a 25/06 and I am not sure who makes screw on barrels that match the high gloss bluing. Maybe I need a 30/06 and a screw on barrel ... hmm maybe I need a 30/06 and screw on barrels in 25/06 and 35 Whalen ... hmm maybe I need a life!

Oh wait. I'm a rifle loony. This IS my life ...

I had wondered about that too and took a glove to the range with me before deer season. I am in Texas and use a thin wool glove sometimes(sure as the hell didn't use one this year it didn't match my bathing suit) I could feel the little blade and def noticed when it pulled to the trigger. I love the accutrigger, once you get used to it you don't even think about the little blade and you can adjust it back and forth very easily for example when I did have the glove on I thought my trigger was set a little lite and if I wanted to I could have adjusted it right there.

BTT for an answer to my previous musing ...

Does anybody know of a source for aftermarket barrels that would match the factory bluing on these beauties?

UPDATE:

Stopped in the shop last night... they didn't have a classic, but I did get to handle an accutrigger savage (and several other rifles). The accutrigger felt VERY nice to me. It wasn't set overly light (probably ~ 4 to 4.5 lbs) but broke beautifully. The blade thing didn't bother me. There was enough difference in it's pull and the trigger's that there was no doubt when I was holding only on the trigger. If the trigger was set at it's lightest, and I was wearing gloves, maybe it'd be an issue... but with the trigger pull as it was set, I pretty sure it'd be fine wearing light gloves (I forgot to bring the pair I normally wear hunting).

The upshot is that since it's their year end, this outfit is basically sold out of everything (even in other cities). They're ordering this year's inventory in 3 weeks, so by early spring they say they'll have a slew of wood stocked .308's in the rack and availble for fondling. Unless something nice that's used comes up before then, I'll likely hold off a while. I'm still leaning towards the model 14.. even more so after feeling the accutrigger.

Aside from the accutrigger, I learned that I didn't care for the finish on the wood stocked Tikka (T3 -lite I think...) I thought it was a brown composite at first... and that the short action BDL handles and looks very nice (IMHO). They didn't have any featherweight to handle.

Dempsey... doesn't look like anything wrong with that find to me! If the stock is nice looking, maybe it's worth acraglassing and pinning it?

I think a model 14 in 7-08 would be great, but does it bother anyone else that you can't get it with a conventional hinged floorplate on the mag?

thanks ratsmacker, but I'm in Canada. Importing would be a major hassle.

Expat...
I also considered the 7-08... but like the wide array of factory 308 around. Savage must've heard you.. look at this new for '06.

Geeze I look like a schill (sp?) for Savage

Now they are talking! Wonder if a 114 stock would fit on my 10 year old 116?

It worked for me. Turned an ugly duckling into a very pretty rifle. The most accurate rifle I have! Thanks...Bill.

So, I guess the model 14 stock will fit my synthetic model 16?
