I was lucky enough to be there on 3 elk hunts this year. Scattered from among them I had a few photos that were worthy of sharing. I had been meaning to show you all this bull that my trail cam caught on my property this summer. Hard to guess a score at this stage of antler but Ill bet it would score nicely. I was hoping it was an omen of the season to come. I had been watching this herd in my muzzleloader unit. They disappeared as soon as the season opened. I didnt get into the elk during muzzleloader season but I did find deer. These 4 were giving me a close inspection. I only had a cow tag. Some elk must have been around here at one time judging by this shed I found. First season herds in Northwest Colorado. Nice 6x on the right of the photo. During first season I got a nice bull. He is actually the biggest one Ive ever gotten but not by a lot. I was very discouraged when the sun set the day I found him. I thought Id never see him again. The next morning he was in nearly the exact same place in the oakbrush and the maneuvering for a shot continued. During second season my RV served as the chuckwagon for the crew. One of the things I really enjoyed was being able to watch a herd from the comfort of my rig. I had a great location where could sit at the dining table in and glass the herd of elk in the distant meadows as they came out to feed at dusk. They would still be there at mornings first light but would retreat to the trees when the sun came. I didnt have an elk tag on this hunt just a small game license that I used for some grouse hunting.

(continued) I was very impressed with the Davis tent in the wind. We had some vicious wind gusts. This was the first time we'd used it and didn't know what to expect from it. The guys in the tent reported that it was pretty solid. The cattle dogs approved of it also. First time in a new unit, public land, leftover tags, DIY. It only took a few minutes to fill 2 tags. Opening morning second season I took 2 brothers up to a place where that I thought would be a natural passage for elk. One of the brothers (on his very first hunt) killed a nice cow about 10 minutes after legal shooting time. His brother killed his first bull on an OTC tag a couple of minutes before that. The load out. Beginning of a long and heavy descent with a full load.

Good job A, and thanks for the pics. And that bull in the talus... elk go in the weirdest places, don't they?!

Good job A, and thanks for the pics. And that bull in the talus... elk go in the weirdest places, don't they?! Occasionally I've seen elk cross talus but I didn't expect them to break cover under pressure. I told the brothers that I expected the timber near the talus to be their preferred path. Bad decision by the herd cow I think.

Good hunt Alamosa! Lots of elk meat to go around. What were the calibers and bullets?

Damn nice deer there Alamosa. I have got to shoot one of those one of these days. That herd was even nicer just a few minutes prior to that photo. It had been a herd of 6 bucks. Just before sunrise I was on near this ridge looking for a cow and there was some commotion, then 2 muzzleloader shots (presumably taking the two best bucks from the herd). Then a black bear flushed out of the timber toward me on the road below. A few minutes later the remains of the herd appeared on the ridge above me for that photo.

Why can't I be that lucky? great photos.

Those Mule deer pics got me more excited than the elk (other than the dead one). Looks like you have found a terrific place to make some memories. Thanks for sharing with us.
