Last I heard we were at 13,

Yea, I guess we best leave those woofs alone.

So that's about 1/3 of the kill goal. If that pace continues the hunt could be over sooner than expected.

There is one thing I am trying to get to the bottom of is; how many permits did livestock owners receive this year and how many wolves did they kill? Also, how many problem wolves were killed by USDA Wildlife Services this year and road kill. Were those numbers factored into DNR's overall management kill goal?

I am being bounced around, pillar to post on the questions. It is my suspicion that maybe they do not want that info to get out to the anti's.

44 taken as of today.

Roundoak-- believe me, every conceivable number was factored into the management goals. Wydeven and crew have been working on this a long, long time.

A lot of reading material is available:

57 taken so far. That's more than halfway to the quota and we haven't even had our firearms deer season yet. Not likely the wolf season lasts until February this year. Next year--all bets are off.

A source within the DNR came through for me with some statistics on my questions.

A list of wolf mortalities by cause, detected so far in 2012, is below.

57 euthanized by USDA-WS for depredation control
17 legally taken by landowners for depredation control (14 under shooting permits, 3 in the act of depredating)
20 vehicle collision
8 illegally killed
4 unknown cause

So before the wolf hunt started in October there were 106 mortalities. Add the current number of wolves killed by permit holders, 72 we are at 178 mortalities.

You cheezers better pick up the slack. MN boys are stackin up like cord wood. I'll have to eat crow on that one. I didn't think they'd get that many. Could reach the early season quota of 200 by this weekend if things work out right.

200 more to go in a few weeks. smile

Primary and secondary range is in the northern 1/3 of the state and a cluster of counties in the central part. Click on map below.

You have to give us some credit, tzone. We have 1,160 permits compared to your 3,600 permits plus we only have about 850 targets compared to your 3,000 targets. grin

I know it was tongue 'n cheek. Youse guys got a bit longer season with now "split" or limit on hunting technique. I like that!

I wonder if the MN season will continue next year or be held up in court?

Realistically, the numbers in either state, if the harvest quota is reached, won't do much for the population. It will give the DNR in both states plenty of samples for age structure and location though. That is good IMO.
