Anybody have a Remington 40X rimfire? I'm looking to get into rimfire prone competition and the 40X looks interesting, and potentially less expensive than an Anschutz M54 prone rifle.
I shot one in high school on our rifle team for awhile, until I got hold of a 52. I think the Remington MIGHT have been a little better, but not by much. We shot NRA smallbore in Indiana back in the mid '70s, before they got all goofy about lead poisoning and such. Frankly, at 50feet, even the Mossberg 144s and 44s did okay, the smaller kids got those, us husky types got the Winchesters and Remingtons.....
We as a matter of course, always beat the JROTC teams local to us, that were issued Anschutz rifles, we were NEVER beaten by them. Of course, it's the shooters/coaches that made the difference. We had GOOD coaches.
We traded state championships with another school up in Northern Indiana all throughout the '70s.

You can roll a turd in peanuts, dip it in chocolate, and it still ain't no damn Baby Ruth.
I have several of the surplus 40X's. They shoot fair to pretty darn good, but the mileage and treatment of the barrels differ. I'd think a new 40X should be pretty competitive. If you decide to go with a custom barrel later down the road, you've got an excellent setup for upgrading.
What is the going rate for a 40x in 22lr. Saw a couple sporters on Guns America that are over $6k .... and one at $1500 in WMR. At those prices it would be cheaper to buy a turbo action and go from there!!
I paid about $700 for mine 5 years ago. It had slight rust pitting just below the stock line. I sold the stock with handstop and redfield international sights for a couple of hundred. Put it in a McMillan
I'm looking for one of the single shot models with the 700 type bolt handle (not the earlier 722 type bolt handle). Likely put it in a McMillan Marksman stock if I can find just a barreled action.

Used ones pop up on Gunbroker fairly often. As of yesterday, there were a couple but IIRC only one was priced about right. Search Remington 40X,40-X and 40-XB. Sometimes the "B" version will show up listed as 40X or 40-X; just look for the Model 700 style bolt. If it's a CMP gun (marked US or USMC, etc.) make sure the bolt matches the receiver type as some 40X's were mated with "B" bolts and vice versa. The rifles and bolts were shipped to CMP separately so some have their original bolts of the correct type and with a matching serial number, some don't but all were headspace checked by their armorers.
I have several rimfire's 40-X's and XB's (both heavy and standard barrel versions) and it's hard to go wrong with one. You'll just smile with how solidly the bolt locks up when you push that first round home.
NRA Life,Endowment,Patron or Benefactor since '72.
You want the 40XB that's the 700 style. They use 700 style parts. There is a thread on the CMP forum that is trying to reunite the correct rifle and bolts.
Remington made a few differnet variations of the 40X rimfires 40-x (no s/n suffix) round bolt handle, 722 action dimensions 28" target barrel (.75 muzzle) 28" heavy barrel (.875 muzzle)
40-x (B S/N suffix) oval bolt handle, 700 SA dimensions 28" target barrel (.75 muzzle) 28" heavy barrel (.875 muzzle)
40-X (R S/N suffix)oval bolt handle, 700 SA dimensions 24" barrel I forget the muzzle dia. There also was the BR model in the green BR stock and heavy staniless barrel
They also made a few 40X sporters in a repeater while the later models were single shot.

I had one of those. Pretty rare.
It shot match ammo great, but the chamber was pretty tight and short. It didn't do well with regular hunting ammo. And I bought it for squirrel hunting, not for shooting match ammo. It was big and heavy for a rimfire.
I traded it without reservations or regrets.
My keeper .22 LR is a Classic Cooper with 2-7 Kahles rimfire glass. I've also had Anschutz and Kimber .22's. This Cooper is the best of the lot, pick of the litter, IMHO.
