I've got a NM Barbary hunt coming up in February, and was wanting to use my 257 Wby. I just got the rifle last year, it's a Remington 700 LSS, with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 RZ800 mounted on it. I've only had one opportunity to test it out on an animal (last weekend on a mulie), and it performed great. I'm sighted in with 100gr TSX factory rounds.

I realize that shot placement is key, regardless of caliber. However, from what I've read, Barbary seem to have some sort of mythical ability to soak up the punishment. I do have a .270 Win and a .300 Win Mag that I could also take. I guess I just want to give the new rig another test ride.

Any thoughts?

Hell, yes.

Guys in Tx. have told me they can soak up punishment unlike most other animals..I have only killed two, both young rams..they were shot at about 400 yds. with a .257 Wea. and 100 grain Nosler BTBT..As we came up to the rams, one required a second shot to keep it down..I favor my .300's, but the .257 worked fine on those rams..

I've only shot one so not a guideline. I used a 6.5-284 with 140 grain Accubonds. Hit him well but he ran off about 50 yards and died. No pass through. I had pass through on Blackbuck, Sika bull (210 pounds) and whitetail.

The hunt starts in a week, and just today I spoke with a buddy I hadn't seen in a few months who is in the camp that the Barbary are tougher than you would expect and he is taking his .300 Win. I am still planning on taking the .257 Wby, but will also take along my .300 Win just in case it's windy. I've heard both sides regarding their toughness. I just need to put the bullet where it needs to go!

Unless you see a big one, he's heading out of Dodge, and you don't have the perfect broadside shot. I'd use one of the other two. Hell, guys have killed them with a .223 under ideal conditions.


I shot one, shooting down at him from above, between the shoulder blades with a 7MM-08, at 60 yards. Blood all over the first 100 yards. Trailed him over a mile.


They aren't the animal you want to experiment on, in my opinion. Either way, best of luck to you...it's gonna be a fun hunt. I'm hooked on them.

I've curious but what kind of weight are we talking about with this critter?

B4 I know I'm with Ingwe, and heck yes the 257's gonna do you fine.

Wouldn't hesitate to use my .257WBY on a Barbary as I've used mine on elk and bears with nary an issue. On anything less then an ideal angle I've just opted to punch the shoulder.

Has worked great on bulls and bruins as they don't go far at all in my experience with busted shoulders and back and meat loss has been minimal at best for me doing so.
