Dear BobinNH, you are so mucho correctamundo i cant believe it

Maybe I'm risking my "rifle looney" status, but I must admit when I had my current .280 built, I thought seriously about getting a .270. Only the fact that I had a large supply of 7mm bullets is why I went with the .280.....
I can argue that the .280 case holds slightly, and that's very slightly, more water, 68.6 grs. vs. 67.4 grs. for the .270..... However, the 7mm Rem Magnum holds 83.2 grs.
I've noticed my .280 kicks less when I load it with 120 gr.-140 gr. bullets vs. my 1/4 lb. lighter '06 when loaded with 180-200 gr. bullets. But, if I load the '06 with 155 gr. bullets and the .280 with 140-154 gr. bullets, I really can't tell.
I can even buy some Federal Premium ammo for the .280 loaded with the excellent 150 gr. Nosler Partition. I don't really know how fast they go, but the shoot quite well. So, I probably don't have to worry about top quality factory ammo anymore either.

I love my 280 but love the 7mm's in general. Bob as always puts it plain and simple. I'm in the first group though, Is the 280 better than the 270 or 30-06, no, but I like being different. To be honest as much as I like the 280, its little brother the 7mm-08 has had my attention lately and gets carried more than any other I own the last 2 seasons.

The .280 just has a certain panache that the .270W & 7RM can only dream about.

E: That Federal Premium 150 NP load has always been a goto choice in factory loads for me.

Another type of 280 owner: 50 year old city boy raised by their mom whose dad gives him when he's 80 an shr 970 with a nikon monarch scope and tries to make up a little late for a lost past. thanks, dad, RIP. Also a lesson in reloading and an o'conner book (obsolete). anyway, you and speer (2007) agree that the difference is about 200fps, maybe 4" drop @ 500 yd. , which speer calls "little practical advantage." what is the whole 270/280/30'06/remmag discussion about? not only incrementalism but tradeoffs, diminishing returns and perceptions. if it works for you, i'm for it

I think I read above somewhere that someone said a 280 will beat a 270 by 200 feet per second with bullets the same weight....

How so?

Larger bore diameter= greater velocity with same weight bullets, assuming that both are loaded to equal pressures.

Or pretty smart.

I joined the 280 club this year. I found a Rem 700 XCR in 280. Living in wetter Oregon it is nice to have a rifle for the really wet weather. I topped it with a Bushnell 4200. Shoots 150 gr E-tips and 160 gr Accubonds very well. Figure it will handle anything in my area fine. Not too worried about "100 GPS" here of there

I tend to hand paired rifles, little brother & big brother. The 280 has a big brother 35 Whelen

It doesn't.......that would mean a 280 could do 3100-3150 with a 150 gr in both cartridges( the 270 does 2900-2950 easily from 22" barrels)....no data shows that speed for the 280 and a 150.It takes a 280AI to get that velocity with a 150,and I doubt many of those do more than 3050 or so.There ain't no magic in .007 of an inch.

This is the kind of Grimms Fairy Tale that 280 Remington users go about sputtering all the time....drives me nuts.Most of the stuff is "made-up" BS.Most of the perps have never owned or loaded for either....or a sample of "one".

Just do a cursory glance at the Nosler Manual....notice how close the velocities are for both cartridges with 140 gr bullets.....then note they use a 26" barrel for the 280,and a 24" for the 270.

In real life, there is no difference.
