"High Dynamic Range". They're typically 2-4 stacked exposures (using PS) , usually applied to a shot that has "too wide" of an EV value to expose with one shot.

very difficult to do well

I use Photomatix and will often combine as many as 9 photos. There are some presets that will allow you to do some very natural images. I would estimate that about 70% of my work now is some HDR to some extent. You need a sturdy tripod and a sharp lens.

Great photography is not about being in the right place at the right time, it is about putting yourself in the right place at the right time.

I am using a stock Nikkor 18-55 that came with my D50. What lens would you recommend?

I am also using photomatix and ps for processing. I have not tried more then 3 photos yet but can't wait to take the tripod out and try it.

Thank you. Always wondered what that was. I assume that you take a series of shots at different settings to capture the whole range and make one photo out of it? Beautiful photo's up there!
