I've got a number of great bolt action varmint rifles, but I've got the itch to try an AR- probably a Rock River- for coyote calling. The quick second shot appeals to me and besides, they just seem like a hoot to take out and shoot. Haven't shot one much since my Army days during Vietnam war, (which I missed by about 3 days).

Will the current varmint weight barrels, flattop uppers, and trigger assemblies in the Rock River and other better AR's shoot into 1" or better (hopefully much better as my bolts all will)? Some of my coyote shooting can get pretty long and I'd like to be able to reach out to those dogs that like to hang up at 400 yards or so..

I normally get 1/4" to 3/4" with my AR's depending on which one and what type of scope I put on it.

The Rock River Coyote I had shot around 1/2"-3/4", but if you reload could trim it down a bit.

I still primarily coyote hunt with a bolt 22-250 because it's nasty accurate even with factory loads.

yes, most will.

I came in 2nd i a sniper shoot with 16"BBl Bushmaster shooting IMI greentips one year. Iron sights.
I was flanked by the winner and his team partner, both shooting 700PSS 308's w/ 10X MK IV's/
Pleanty accurate.

Black rifles can be scary accurate. Their design lends itself to inherent accuracy. Get a Match barrel and the Rock River 2 stage National Match trigger. Or other aftermarket target trigger but I've noticed the price difference btw the RRA NM trigger and the others is substantial. The RRA NM is still a great value and you'll be plenty a threat to dogs at 400 yards.

It's not hard to find some of the more accurate ones that will go into 1/2". The AR platform is one of the most accurate out there for a semi-auto, many will shoot with the bolt guns.

Rock Rivers do shoot! I have bought three different ones that would do at least 0.60" with ammo it liked.

Here's a link on another Ruger that will run with the black rifles.
