I picked up a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 for under 300 bucks with that Cabela's sale, and I think it should go on a rifle for my little guy when he grows up.
After seeing the results of the TSX bullets on deer, I am going to go with a .223 bolt-action, although I won't be surprised if he ends up liking my ARs a lot as well.
What have you guys done for your children in terms of rifles? I am leaning towards something that he can re-stock and keep using as he is older, and not a super low-end rifle like an Axis or XS7 or ATR-100.
There is always the Remington 700. The Vanguards are also looking good, especially with the adjustable LOP stocks that the youth models come with. Savage has impressed me in the accuracy department, and they have youth models as well.
Ruger has the compact series of rifles that might be perfect also, especially with a low-powder volume round like the .223
Anyhow, if you've outfitted your little-guy or gal, let me know what worked and what didn't.
These threads are common and I always have the same suggestion. Remington model 7. I grew up with one of the originals with the 18.5" barrel and couldn't have been happier. But it sounded like you knew what you're talking about and there are a few good options these days. Savages are accurate, vanguards have some good options, 700s can do everything but I just think the little seven action is ideal for youngsters and he'll never outgrow it. I have a bunch of sevens now but have a soft spot for the original 18.5"bbl and schnabeled walnut ones.
The Rem. does not have an adequate safety that secures the firing pin when the bolt is opened on safe nor when on full safe.
Get a M70 or Kimber rifle.
Don't be cheap.

I think a 700 of any flavor is a wise choice - especially since various stocks can be had on the cheap to accommodate the youngsters ever-changing LOP.

Dang I guess I'm lucky to still be here. Also I'll tell my dad next time I see him he's cheap. Sure didn't feel like it when I went out with my friends carrying 30-30s and slugs in smoothbores. If you can't teach a youngster how to safely use a remmy I think you should both pickup a xbox controller and find a new hobby.

Thanks
I just set-up a little Ruger Hawkeye in 223 for a Bud on hard times, had him save the walnut stock for when the kids grow, bought a Ruger factory syn stock, had a bud cut it to length and install a nice Decellerator pad.
Loaded up 100 rounds of 55 gr TSX's powered by the new CFE-223 powder to a speed of 3225 fps, I was gonna try it out on deer first, but relented and handed it over to my old friend so they could shoot it and be accustomed with it before opening day, hope to be getting a report in the coming weeks on how it did on deer for his kid.

I got my oldest boy a remington model seven cdl in .308 and my youngest a micro-medalion in 7-08 , also have a ruger m-77 compact in .260 that works well for youngsters remingtons are plenty safe enough
Started mine on an H and R single shot .243 with a youth stock. At the time he was too short for most youth stocks but the H and R was about 11 inches IIRC.
Now that he is taller and can fit a regular youth stock I went with the Rem 700 youth in .243. It really likes 95 gr Fusions. It comes with a spacer to lengthen the stock when he gets bigger. Seems to be a good fit and the choice of aftermarket items if you want, or need them doesn't hurt.
There's an FN Winchester FW in .257 Roberts in the back of my safe right now for when my boy(or maybe my daughter, she's older but I really doubt that she will want to hunt) gets big enough.

I don't always shoot Mausers, but when I do...I prefer VZ-24s.
Well, when my son gets a little older than three, he will end up with a 700 Compact in .223 with a Leupy 6x36 or 6x42 scope, a Winchester Featherweight Compact in 7-08 with a Leupy 4x, and a .243 probably in a Remington, but maybe an M70 Fwt. as well, also Leupy 4x.
Just me, but until he settles down a bit, I think a fixed scope is the way to go on a youth rifle... just one less thing for them to fiddle with.

Although, when Nolan is 12 years old, he may not need a youth stock... he's showing signs of being nearly as tall as daddy, and I was probably nearly 6' tall when I was 12...
