Today was Indiana's opening day of gun and I of course took Matthew out with me.
He was willing to shoot anything but would have preferred a buck...who wouldn't.
Anyway we were seeing plenty of deer (all does) but they just weren't cooperating and the closest one got was 80 yds with the majority at or beyond the 100 yd mark.
They would stay in the thick stuff or be on the run which for a newer hunter can be frustrating.
At about 4:15 this evening I noticed movement in the crp field to our 5 o'clock position and saw a rack coming through the brush, headed toward us.
I had Matthew spin around and get his rifle ready and the buck popped out near a little treeline seperating two fields...anyway he's about 45yds from us and scanning the field and started walking slowly into the field exposing himself totally to us, I'm sitting there whispering to Matthew "shoot him, there's your shot!!!
Just when I thought the buck was going to get away...bang!
The buck takes off running with his tail down..I thought I heard a faint crash...turns out I did.
After a little searching we found Matthews trophy about 50 yds from where he shot it.
Oh yeah he shot it with his .357 max tc contender I built for him last year.
