From reading the article, he sounds like just another nut case. That kind of misadventure gives survivalists a bad name.

From reading the article, i think it is safe to assume he didn't attempt the 30 mile hike out. He left behind his diary, and both rifles. Probably went out for the day and got munched.

Looks like they teach some interesting skills, but I don't think going through the (attempted) brainwashing would be worth it. I wonder if there are any survivalist schools that don't have strong religious or political overtones?

Two months is a long time to be, out for the day, with his stuff left in the cabin. Hope the best for him. Tough being the search and rescue people when they are put in this situation.

SAGEBRUSHER - " I wonder if there are any survivalist schools that don't have strong religious or political overtones?"

Here is a link to a man who is a moderator at www.bushcraftusa.com, who is a former USAF Survival Instructor. He has a forum there called "Bushclass," where he has made many, many short videos demonstrating various outdoor skills he's learned and taught. He encourages the Bushcraft USA viewers to practice the many skills both at home, and then out in the boonies. The videos are free to watch.

Just watch them... and then practice.

No religion, no politics, no "spirit or vision quest" etc. Just a former USAF Survival instructor teaching what he knows and has learned.

I think he sometmes teaches "hands on" classes but I don't know the schedule or the charge.

About six miles due south of there, where the Ambler River turns west, is where I was during 9-11. Uncas and my surrogate Dad and I spent over two weeks in that area caribou hunting.

There are a bunch of BIG grizzlies and black bears along that river. Lots of caribou and berries, as well as a run of chum salmon, Dolly Varden, and the blackest Grayling I have ever seen in the Ambler River.

Beautiful place, but not the most hospitable. There were homesteaders in that cabin back then and they weren't Swedish!

Can't imagine he'd try to walk out without some form of protection and supplies. Sounds to me like he either a) fell in the river and drowned or b) had a run-in with a bad tempered grizzly. I cannot see him surviving in this bitter cold for very long without any gear.

That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.
