i'd say a mosin-nagant m-44 (bayo removed and bayo bracket milled off) or m-38 with mil-surp ball on stripper clips close at hand. hey, if it gets stolen, it's $90. and it'll handle all manner of critters, two and four legged, at substantial range. a bit more money, yugo m-48 in 8x57, ammo stored on stripper clips, but the rifle is 3.5 inches longer. or, as already mentioned, a no. 4 mark 1 with a packed 10-round mag in the glove box. jungle carbines are too valuable to be trucking around.

My latest truck gun is a Winchester 70 stainless Ultimate Shadow in 243 WSSM, but there is also a Savage 24V in 223/20 somewhere in there and maybe even a S&W 422.

An NEF single in whatever caliber, with a Williams Guide peep sight on the back, is short and light and well...just Handi.

true Dakota, but what i REALLY found interesting this weekend was when i sat my NEF in 45/70 next to my stepdaughters Remmy Mdl 7 Youth rifle in 7-08, the remmy is only an inch longer than the NEF even with the bolt guns 20 inch barrel. im thinking a Remmy 7 in 300 whisper, barrel at 18 inches, stock built for me i can come out shorter than the NEF by an 1/2-1 inch and have a repeater.

If you start dealing hard, I would not feel the least bit bad about asking him to cut back on his commision! h I am sure that he did not acquire the Mauser by cutting back his commission. GeoW

Since it is coyote season and the bears are sleeping it is my Howa 22-250 for chance encounters. Otherwise it is a Rem 7600 with williams receiver sight, 220 grain 30-06 handloads.

GeoW Naw, he inherited the rifle,- along with about 20 others of similar quality! Seems he was related to a General in the US Army who liberated a small sector of Das Reich.

I'm not a great believer in choosing a truck gun based on cost alone. A decent set of optics and a good trigger seem to be a minimum for me, I love my mil-surps, but the only one that sees truck duty is a K-31 with a K6 mounted. My usual is a push feed M70 in '06 or aT3 lite in 22-250..........Essex

I have a .32 Win 16" Wrangler with the standard hoop in a leather scabbard that works well for truck or 4-wheel carry. The sight is the "one ragged hole" peep and does not take up much room. I also keep a 20ga 3" Benelli Syn Nova in a breakdown hardcase in the trunk of our travel car. Ammo is birdshot, 3" mags, and slugs. It is great for family visits and a comfort always.

I think the Savage/Stevens 200 was made to be a truck gun. Plastic stock and deadly accurate for $199. I bought a .270, but sighted in with 115 recoil managed loads this weekend. If I was in "bigger" country, I would use the full loads for the better trajectory, but in Leon Co I only can shoot a couple hundred hards at the resident pigs and coyotes. The crystal clear 3 x 9 Elite scope is overkill, but I plan on using it on moonlit nights. Entirely legal for hogs here in TX.

A short handy firearm makes it so much easier!

I haul around a Winchester Trapper in cal. 30-30. It is short, light, and easy to handle. These guns are suprisingly accurate, too.
