Yes. Large surface combatants and manned combat aircraft are obsolete.

Yes. Large surface combatants and manned combat aircraft are obsolete. Eric from My AF POV don't think we're quite ready for cylon manned combat AC just yet even though we have unmanned drones in several theaters at present.I'm not saying you're wrong just don't see it happening anytime soon.

You might be right and I would quantify my statement to wit they are obsolete against a near-peer enemy; for "peace enforcement" or humanitarian missions against relatively unsophisticated adversaries, they still have some value.

There are no near peers to the US Navy.
Hasn't been since 1943 or so.
Carriers are far from obsolete and are in fact the most potent non-nuclear weapon system ever made.

Yes. Large surface combatants and manned combat aircraft are obsolete. Way wrong. In fact, Large Surface Combatants (both CVN and CG) that can be at sea more and in port less are in high demand. There's a reason that a higher % of the fleet is at sea now on operational deployments than ever before. Manned aircraft will continue to be the platform of choice for close air support and all missions areas forward without extensive C4. The sweet spot for unmanned is long dwell ISR and deep strike penetration first night combined with low observables. Many of those unmanned ISR assets will fly from big deck CVN's that are forward deployed. I know of what I speak with real world experience both as an NFO and an engineer who puts things on UAV's.

Also seems like a manned aircraft will be a lot tougher to hack than a drone, if the Iranians' capture of that drone is any indication.
If these rail guns/big lasers come to fruition, anything flying toward our ships isn't going to get very close.

Wow, a 11 year old war game and an Army colonel telling me carriers are obsolete? Well, that pretty much, um, well, it's pretty irrelevant. Many of us spent much time in our professional officer careers carefully looking at these issues and many of us in our post-service careers continue to be very active in them. Suggest you instead look towards some of the professional journals and service college papers for some useful references. http://www.strategicstudiesinstitute.army.milhttp://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/awc-mxwl.htmhttp://www.usnwc.edu/Publications/Naval-War-College-Press/Newport-Papers.aspxhttp://www.usni.orgYou want to discuss one of the papers there I'm happy to do so but posting stuff like you did simply puts you in the category of Lee24, DerbyDude and TRH on knowledge about the military and I assure you that's not a category anyone with a brain wants to be in.

What Pugs said.
Only an idiot would not realize the utility of putting fixed wing assets along with ISR, Marines, etc. on a moveable, combat capable platform.
Those poo poohing the carrier have little or no understanding of warfare.
q: If carriers are obsolete, why are the Chinese rushing to build them?
