Anyone hunting with this particular Kimber model? Thoughts on its use as an elk gun, beyond the obvious weight difference between it and the Montana?

I haven't actually handled one but owning a few other Kimber rifles i know i would like to have one. I've been keeping my eyes open and checking gunbroker frequently and all i can say is good luck finding one to check out! I haven't seen even one for sale yet. Alot of 300 wsm but not a one in 300 winny. I guess that must mean that the guys that have em love em and are going to hold on to em.

Had one for a short while. Firing pin and hole in bolt face didn't line up causing misfires and eventually a bent firing pin. Shop I bought it from gave me the option of a refund or send it back to Kimber. The rifle showed promise but the situation left me with a bad taste so I took the refund.

Kimber 8400 is the action. The Montana is the model. I am assuming you are looking at a Classic or Select Grade if it is something different. The wood stocked Kimbers have hinged look plates and the Montana doesn't.

Yep, looking at a Select grade model, should have been more clear.

I had one in the Montana version years ago. It was fine, just gravitated to the 300WSM Montana. I think the 26" 300WM is a little much. The 6-7 extra ounces will help you in recoil mitigation though. I just went the route of kevlar as our hunts were pretty tough on walnut. If it fits your style and the price is reasonable, get it. Shoot it with a trusted scope and don't be afraid if the rifle needs to be glass bedded.
Have fun and keep us informed.
